Right, if you live in Australia and watch Australia's got Talent (strangely enough I'm neither of these things), you may remember one William Cambell - a diaboloist, aka the "heart-throb of diabolo".

now, for his performance on the show, this is what he came up with: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7iWcjnGcw8&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fdiabolo.ca%2Fforum%2Findex.php%3Ftopic%3D6489.0&feature=player_embedded

Since then William has also posted his own video, which (I think) is aimed not at appeasing a crowd, but rather to impress other professional diaboloists like himself: http://juggling.tv/video/2338/wintertime

Now, being a bit of a diaboloist myself (though not nearly as impressive as William), I find the second video much more impressive, due to the technical skill involved in it; however, given the fact that the first video is geared towards an amateur audience like the one at the Escapist (I'm presuming here that the large majority of you have nothing to do with diaboloing or any other form of circus skill), I'm curious of whether people prefer the first or the second one better.

(please keep in mind that I'm judging the diabolo skill, not the camera work, etc, which is much better in the first video since its being done professionally).

please help me with my little curiosity by voting in the poll and maybe giving your own opinion. Thanks! :)

Wow that was awesome, how the hell do those things work?

I liked the first one, it was faster and looked cooler, plus he did a backflip.

I liked the second video a bit more since you actually see what he's doing, the first one is so much more about the speed, rather than the complexity. I haven't really done anything with a diabolo, other than trying (and failing miserably most of the time) some basic tricks a few times when my friend has practiced with his diabolo.

Excellent videos both, I had no idea you could do all that stuff with a diabolo. The fact that I've failed in my few attemps at diaboloing so miserably makes these videos all the more impressive.

1. If he's a "heart throb" then I'm disappointed in females. He looks like he's 9.

2. However, he has some serious diablo skills, the second video is better.

I have never even heard of diabolo before. I thought you were talking about the computer RPG from Blizzard. How wrong was I?

I found the first video to be lacking. It was pandering to the crowd who seemed to only be impressed by shooting those things as high as he could rather than doing anything with them whereas the second video showed more of why anyone would bother with diabolo in the first place, that odd dance as the things seem to hover in mid air and move around. He didn't get to really do this in the first video since he was just going as fast as he could. A high energy song just seems like the wrong background music. Minimalist stuff like Phillip Glass might be better as using a diabolo has a more dreamlike quality to it than an exciting rush as he was going for in the first video. So, yes, the second video was better, and I had no idea what diabolo was until I watched the videos.

haha, a diabolo is very similar to a yo-yo... the diabolo itself spins rather fast, and you give it speed by tugging with the string :p

If you want to start leaning, this: http://www.diabolotricks.com/Basics.htm is a good place to start

I agree that the second was much better in terms of skill, having never heard of diabolo prior to this thread. However, the first one was live, and was impressive that he did that all in one try with all that pressure on him.

i liked the first one. it was faster paced, and since i don't do diabolo i don't really know which is more complicated.
in fact when i first read your post i kept reading diablo, i thought you were on about the game. i have seen diabolo before though, just didn't know what it was called till now.
out of interest, did he win AGT?

I'm afraid not... he came I think about 3rd? A singer won instead... bloody typical of the show really, honestly I actually hate the program lol :p

I liked the second one better. It showed more skill and you were able to see what he actually did while the first it felt more like he was trying, and succeeding, in doing allot in a short amount of time. Also I have only tried it once or twice 4-5 years ago...

Agreed, I despise "X Country" Has Talent shows just because they always take singers so far, if they want to sing go to "X Country" Idol and let people with real talent win.

That was fairly immense. I don't do diablo but both my sisters do and they can't do anything compared to that.

Anyway, I think the second video is better. He shows some very amazing tricks in it and since some of it is in slow motion, you can actually see how complex the trick actually is.

Also, you can see why he's a heart throb. It's the same reason The Jonas Brothers are heart throbs. They look like 12 year olds.

Damn, and I thought my little brother was good with those things. Anyway, I like both video's, but obviously the first was a true show performance and the second more technical. I always appreciate skill and technique over show, so I go for the second one.

The second video shows more skill but it's like comparing skating videos of a single run with a skating montage - the second video is clearly multiple scenes so there is plenty of time for any possible mistakes to be ironed (and edited) out.

For a single performance under pressure he has every right to play it safe and go with less complex tricks that he can rely on.

For some reason I first read something with Diablo. I thought you were a devil worshipper of some kind. Should have slept more than 3 hours...

Anyway, I have absolutely no connection with these Diabolo thingies. I found the first video to be better. It had more showmanship, and showed more variation on what can be done with the things. While some of the moves on the second video seemed more impressive, they were just certain moves edited in a row. They are nice technically, but for entertainment value (which I am assuming you mean by the better video), I prefer the first video. I am usually not really moved by showmanship, but this kid is pretty young and I think he did a good job, standing on stage and all.

This is quite similar to a talk I had about music the other day.

Wait, please bare with me!

You can break music into two sections.
1. Music for the masses.
2. Music for muscians.

As a regular person you can sit back and listen to jazz song in the background and enjoy it but as soon as the musicians start playing some stuff a bit more 'out there' people start go to "Eww.. What the crap is that?" and that is fine. Musicians however, when I listen to some weird stuff, they sit there and go "Ohh yeah, that is a nice use of the aug11".

Personally, when I looked at those two vids, I liked the first one more. It was more of a performance, the croud was into it, there were lights and costumes and the kid performed more. In the second one I saw some amazingly cool tricks but it was just in a backyard.

Cool stuff though!

In the second one he wasn't under pressure so could do harder tricks and have afew goes at them until he got them right and looking good.
The first video was probally harder to pull off with consecutive tricks and the fact there was stupid amounts of people in his face, but I prefered watching the second one where he could show his most impressive tricks.
