Honestly I don't see why people ***** about them. Sure my seatbelt feels like it's trying to saw my head off, a trait most Ford seatbelts here in the US seem to share, but that feels a whole lot better than flying through the windshield and slamming into a tree would.
I find the ford ranger's seat belt comfortable. And I am 6' 220 lbs. So I'm not little.
We had an '03 Ranger. It wasn't bad, but they had a habit of locking in place when I leaned forward to grab my coke out of the cupholder or operate something on the dashboard. That was annoying. My '85 F150 likes to saw my neck off, and my friend installed pads on his front belts for the same reason.
Yeah, I have an 03 ranger, and I notice it from time to time, but it isn't that bad. The Honda Element is 1000 times worse. I can never get the belt to get comfortable and if you pull it wrong, it locks. And you will pull it wrong when you are trying to get it off your chin. When I have to ride in my mom's on occasion, I don't even bother buckling up in the back seat.

ok OP. Here's the problem with your thread:
"Okay, context: I have a mate who lived in the US for most of his young life, moved here about a year ago. Every time he gets in my car he complains about having to wear a seatbelt.

"Ugh they're so uncomfortable, nobody at home wore them, this stupid country etc."

Why is there such hatred for the things?"

You're complaining about a widespread hatred existing because of one person.
No I'm not, I'm wondering why there is hatred of them AT ALL. I never said it was widespread.

Clunk, Click Every Trip!

I live in the UK where you have to have seatbelts on by law and I'm cool with a higher suvival rate if I'm in a crash.

When I've been in a car with no seatbelts it's made me feel really uncomfortable and lacking in the protection that could save my life.

Also, my nana was in a car crash when she was younger. She was sitting on someone's lap in the car, so had no seatbelt and she went through the windscreen. She suvived but she a) couldn't remember the acident and after that she could no longer memorise things like music (she was a good piano player) and b) her hair turned white from the shock.

Moral of the story, wear a seat belt.

U.S. here - always wear the seatbelt. ALWAYS. I always ask if everyone is belted in even if I'm not the one driving. Hell, I even look around to check. If they aren't belted in, they get the death stare until they do. If they refuse, then they need to find another ride.

We have that, "Click it, or ticket." slogan used here for all drivers and their passengers. It's unsafe NOT TO put your seatbelt on and there is also the ticket if pulled over.

Your friend is a sissy la-la.

I put on seatbelts by habit. I always have and have no issues with them. I am in canada of course where not wearing one results in a $400 fine.
My sister on the other hand never puts on a seatbelt unless we tell her to, which is every time we get in the car together.
I see no reason to not wear a belt just as I see no reason to not wear a helmet biking. (I don't wear one skiing, but that is because I am poor).

The only reason why you wouldn't wear a seatbelt is laziness, meaning there is no good reason as to why you shouldn't wear one. That being said, I voted seatbelts are for communists cause it made me chuckle.

Regardless, a second's worth of effort is much more preferable to death/fines/horrible injuries.

Your friend sounds like a retard. Everyone I know wears seatbelts... you know... because it's a law and it's a safe way to be in a car while it's in motion.

Well my issue is a bit unique. I was in an accident where my matrix rolled end over end and the seat belt almost killed me. I still wear my seat belt though because I'm too cheap to pay a ticket for not doing so, that and they will jack up your insurance rates if you get a seat belt ticket. So tell your buddy to man up and click the mother in.

I have always put my seatbelt on. I guess it's because my folks wouldn't start the car unless my brother and I had are seatbelts on.

I'm six and a half feet tall and most of my family is taller. I'm confused. Seatbelts don't rub our necks if anything they come down on our arms in a weird place.
It's the car i own, theres no seat height adjustment because of how low and small it is (hothatch), great fun but you sacrifice some comfort.

Yes.

I'd not hard to put on, and it's not THAT uncomfortable unless it gets twisted.

I always wear them in my car, since they're adjustable and don't strangle you.
The belts in my friend's car squeezes you as if it was trying to strangle you, and it chafes my neck something fierce.

It's kinda funny, I have no problem wearing them but I know older people that do. My Dad will wear them when he remembers, but hates it when "Nazi machines" tell him to put on his seatbelt. So sometimes when we are only going a mile or 2 the seatbelt chime will beep the whole way.

I think if there is any ire towards seat belts it has to do with the fact that it is illegal to not wear one. This tends to stick in the craw of a lot of people here in North America (I am including Canada, we have more than our share of clueless rebels). Some people just don't like being told to do anything, even if it means saving thier own life. I would like to think that something like seatbelts or motorcycle helmets shouldn't HAVE to be legislated, rather left to common sense, but unfortunately thanks to a complete lack of personal responsibility and the excessively litigious nature of our society(US especially), that is just not possible.

OT: I wear a belt most times and a motorbike helmet EVERY time, and have had my life saved by a seatbelt at least one time.

Fun Fact: Hawaii has NO motorcycle helmet laws, at all, and I have yet to see a single rider using one when I am there.

First off, I think your mate needs to suck it up. I agree with you, perhaps they aren't the most comfortable thing in the world, but and unrestrained passenger is effectively a projectile in the event of a crash.

I've been in an accident before (mind you, it wasn't my fault, someone else was driving) and when the crash happened, I feel like I would have died if it weren't for my seatbelt. The sudden stop was not a fun time, but I felt the seatbelt hold and keep me from smashing my head on the dashboard or the windshield. With that amount of force, I felt like I could have died or gotten a brain injury or something bad like that.

Albeit, for months afterwards, I felt a tightness in my chest right where the seatbelt was crossed over me, but I'd rather have mild discomfort and be alive than have no discomfort and be dead. Good trade, right?
