As many of you may already know, we Australians don't have an adult rating for video games. Many games have therefore been refused classification and banned. Some have been re-submitted to achieve an MA15+ classification, but it pushes back the release date a few months or so, and sometimes makes the game less fun (Let's admit it, gore is good.)

What some Australian politicians don't seem to see is: It's damaging the economy. People are buying the uncensored versions overseas, seeing as they can't get them here. I can see that excessive violence and gore can be a bit unsettling for some people, but so is playing cheerful kiddy games, and even violent games with shitty rendering because it's a last-minute re-submitted version.

I know this probably won't change the classification system, but I want to know what you guys think. If you think I'm blowing this out of proportion, just look at this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_video_games#Australia then judge.

This thread has been made many times already, but I agree.

I think our classifications should just be umbrella'd by the ESRB.

Well, yes. Obviously.

I also like how Silent Hill: Homecoming was banned "because of very disturbing content". Gee, that wouldn't happen to be the point, would it?

That would also be a good idea. PEGI would work too since it's PAL.

It's also comforting to read that my country has never banned a video game.

This thread has been done 100 times before, and there has been numerous news articles on this site about the sate of the R18 rating here in Australia.

"Yes, but game devs need to have SOME control."

What is that? Do you mean the game developers need to have some control over what their games are rated?

the Australian government really needs to lighten up on this subject. it's not like the whole country's gonna go the hell if they do. just give gamers what they want, and stop treating them like serial rapists waiting to happen.

Oh, sorry if that was unclear... I meant that game devs don't go overboard with sex and violence, you know? Don't just have brains exploding for 2 hours, or an entire game based on being a porn star.

Oh yes. The Aussies definitely need an R-18 rating. I hate seeing my fellow gamers be deprived of a desired game just because of some indecisive baby-boomers who are probably very undereducated about videogames in general.

This also includes anyone in the world who are living in countries who regularly ban violent titles, or people who have to play censored versions.

Definitely. If I was Australian, I'd use Extra Credits' rule with regards to either banned games or dumbed-down games: If you can't reasonably get the game, or you've already bought it and paid the developers their money, feel free to pirate it.

there should definitely be an R18 rating.

Does Australia have an R18 for movies? It's the same thing. Media shouldn't be censored like that.

If they really want to keep games out of the hands of kids hold retailers accountable, and make sure they enforce the rating system. Don't just ban a game from the whole country.

Yes, there should be an R+18 rating (Or something to a similar effect) in Australia, I mean games like Silent Hill might as well not be released at all if you're going to out out all the gore. But if they do give you a +18, I think they should get rid of the +15 rating, it just seems redundant to me.

Between There and There.
Country
The Wide, Brown One.
15-17 year olds will hate it if R18+ is introduced in Australia because the ACB/OFLC will have less pressure to stick games that should have R18+ into the MA15+ meaning many of the big titles they're looking forward to they won't legally be able to buy.

If Rau has his way R18+ will replace MA15+, leaving under 18 gamers only games that fit into the very strict M15 rating or lower.
