I grew up loving cartoons and I still do to this day. Well, I should say until Cartoon Network cancelled Toonami. Then I realized there hadn't been a good american animated series since Megas XLR. The only mature, epic, constantly evolving animated stories are in anime. Maybe all cartoonists in America are too afraid of money and success?
In Japan it seems that cartoons can run for over 300 episodes and it's not such a miracle. But here, they're lucky if they get two seasons. See: Invader Zim, Megas XLR, Samurai Jack, Xiaolin Showdown.
The Simpsons has over 400 episodes but that's not what I'd call an epic.
Plus, if they are good they just get cancelled and they leave all the bile on the air to market crap to little kids.
Recently Kung Fu Panda somewhat softened my heart but that alone is not enough to replace all of the fallen warriors of animation.
I say we need an American epic. What do you guys think?

Well, American animation leans more towards CG than hand drawn animation, and most Americans hold the mindset that animation=cartoons and cartoons=childish.

You guys already have Aqua Teen. What more could you ask for? Just ignore the movie completely though.

I think the real prime of American animation is in it's comedy, South Park, Family Guy, ATHF, Metalocalypse, Code Monkeys, the list goes on.

Do they even make Code Monkeys anymore? I haven't seen it for a long time.

No see the movie doesn't work right unless you watch it three times, then it becomes hilarious.

Yeah they just started the 3rd season I believe.

*edit* Nevermind, just looked it up on Wikipedia, it's "yet to be renewed for a 3rd season."

I don't think the states realy hold animation and cartoons that high in regard. You could say that stuff is Japan's 'thing'.

Comedy cartoons still seem to be doing well, and occasionally (like in Metalocalypse, or at least what I've seen of it) there's a bit of a carry-on storyline, rather than just an episode of jokes that won't be referred to again, but for a full story-based cartoon it's definitely best to go with the anime.

Yes, I should've mentioned Metalocalypse in the good category. It does have a continuity which I appreciate.

I agree on Samurai Jack, that was amazing. Xiaolin Showdown, was O.K., a bit of a hit and a miss though. Never heard of this Mega XLR, and Invader Zim, was frankly, just terrible.

This is the dead set truth, I have only watched that movie twice because it was pathetic compared to S1+2.

I absolutely disagree withou you on Invader Zim sir but I would defend to the death your right to say it.
Here's a link to the Megas XLR opening sequence. If you don't like this then you won't like the series.

An excellent question...
I know it's bad to answer a question with another question but do need the following clarified to take part in the poll:
1. Does The Boondocks count as American or Korean? It's written in the US but the animation is done by Korean studios. (I think some of Series 2 was done in Japan but not sure)
2. Are we discussing the quality of the animation itself or the product as a whole? South Park is a good example of a badly animated show which is a good finished product.

To fly the flag a bit, has anyone here seen Monkey Dust? There's a lot of it on Youtube but sadly the 2nd and 3rd series will never come out on DVD...

Yeah I'll agree it's nowhere as good as the series, but it still had it's moments, mostly in the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes... maybe ATHF only works in 15 minute chunks.
