See title. I've been wanting to go into this industry more and more these days.

Nope
Can't see myself do that, not enough imagination to create good stories that wouldn't be influenced by everything else I've played / read, not good enough at painting to make good artwork for a game and not good enough at computers/coding to make the game.

Aw, no option for "Already have one"? Been there, still there for that matter.

The biggest thing you have to ask yourself is: what do you want to be doing, and what specific skills can you bring to the table?

The most common mistake from aspiring developers is saying you want to come up with ideas and have someone else implement them. That doesn't have a lot of weight as the industry as heard of a vast majority of them already. Neither do we care about what graduate school you went to for some piece of paper. We do care about results, actual portfolio samples, game demos - to see you actually do the work to implement said idea.

So, what are you doing to make yourself more attractive to the game studios? Sitting around posting on forums, or picking up Unity3D or UDK and learning how to use it?

Always been a dream of mine to work within a gaming company, so with my currently on going education in both physical art and digital art I'm driving myself towards getting into the concept art world of gaming. But only when I'm truly happy with my level of drawing, colour, detail and speed of completion are at a point that make me stand out from others, until then though just gotta keep drawing and studying. :)

As much as I like games, I couldn't be a game developer/designer, what have you. It would pull back the curtain and reveal the wizard for me..

Much in the same way, if I get into writing too much at times, I can't enjoy reading fiction, because I get too critical and notice flaws, this and that, and so forth. It's just how my mind works.

Sorry about that. Although this topic is about aspiring to be a game dev (or not), I should have added an option for those who have already done it.

And to those who think gaming will turn sour for them if they do it as a career, well... If you love it enough, it won't be a job but instead it will turn into doing something you love for money. And that definitely sounds like something that's worth shooting for. Now obviously, getting into this industry is pretty tough but one doesn't have to look far to find some great positions in game developing.

And if anything else, it's better than scrubbing toliets or grinding away at a till.

If you mean a job in game development in the video games industry, then yes. Technically 'gaming' could mean anyone who makes games, like the guys at Hasbro making monopoly, or professional gamers and such.

This is true but I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about so i didn't clarify.

Nah.

For one, I don't have any relevant skills.

For two, I think it would take the enjoyment out of games.

For three, I'm only one person and it not like I'd ever have any significant influence.

I do dabble in my own creations from time to time because I just like putting my ideas into practice, but to do this full on is most probably not going to happen, perhaps I someday get really into an idea and just make a full game out of it.

The problem most people do not understand is that between idea and execution stands reality and that is one tough *****.

I have thought of becoming a game dev, yeah. I am a computer science student, so it certainly is a future career possibility for me. Whether I end up at a game dev spot is another story entirely. XD

Did for a while. Decided against it thanks to AAA development not seeming to be my thing, and Indie development taking too long, and besides that I'd decided I'd rather do engineering instead. So yeah, probably not going into a gaming career at this point.

Hell no, there are too many people studying in that field, making every job interview extremely competitive. Also you essentially need good references in order to get a job at most large studios (expect Valve apparently, who love to hire from Digipen on a regular basis). Also, if a game under performs, it is usually the developers who suffer the consequences, regardless of the cause. And I would sooner work at McDonalds for a decade than work in QA, where you are paid minimum to play test a single aspect of a game for weeks at a time. The way that I heard it described as watching the same 30 second clip of a movie 12 hours a day for 3 weeks at a time.

Nope. I plan to make some games and if one did really good, awesome. If not, hell, I'll play it.

If politics, the Civil service and research fall through, Yeah, definitely. If gaming also falls through, its off to the police with me. If that falls through, onwards to the military I go. If I am declared too useless even for military service? I don't have another fallback plan xD

Just thinking about it.

I'd only be useful in the music and sound department. Even if the game was shit, it'd be the best sounding piece of shit you'd ever heard.
