Just a poll trying to confirm a concept I came up with recently...

Personally, I don't identify with any of the categories used to determine religious beliefs - I do not believe in any gods, but at the same time I do not hold the arrogant anti-god position of the atheist, or the "let's wait and see" attitude of the agnostic. Instead, I simply don't care. It's not something I think about. At all. And I never will do. I am not atheistic, I am not agnostic, and I am not religious - I simply Do Not Care.

SO, I came up with the category of "Apatheism" - the position of one who does not care and does not think about it, who gets on with their life without religion or the purposeful lack of it.

Constructive crit.?

I would criticize your concept of apatheism as a true apatheist wouldn't even bother to come up with a name for it, let alone post on the subject. And obviously you do think about it, since you posted a thread on it.

You just wish you were an apatheist. I like rejectionist as that just sounds better.

Athiests shouldn't be anti-god, because thats just stupid.

Thats like being anti-mario. Fictional charachters are fictional.

As far as I'm aware an Athiest isn't always someone with an anti-religious view (it is merely someone who doesn't believe in God), I'm an Athiest yet I couldn't care less about humanity's relations with the various Gods they worship.

So I would have traits of your 'Apatheism' but I am an Athiest.

mm. I'd question your reply. I came up with it when someone asked me what I was. I simply couldn't identify with whatever she threw at me - deserves a name, no?

A few flaws I have noticed.

1: You do care and you do think about it or else you would never have made a post about it. If it meant nothing to you then a post would be pointless.

2: Not all people who believe in God/Goddess/Gods/Goddesses are religious, if there is no religion that fits their belief of the divine then they are not.

3: Apatheism cannot be a singular group because Atheists may not believe in God but also may not care, same goes for those who are agnostic or believe in God just because they believe does not mean they care or that it affects how they live their life.

To me this just makes me think you are trying to make yourself sound unique by creating a new group for your (seemingly hypocritical) point of view.

It's depressing. The "I could care less" take on it isn't what I would call apathy though. Everybody thinks about it. And it's a major concern to alot of people.

I think that your new religion (or lack thereof) is pretty pointless... I dunno, it's like the escapist is "the" place to start a religion these days.

To me, giving names to one's beliefs isn't the best way. There are litterally hundreds of variations of "Christians". Personally, anyone's religous beliefs is between them and whatever they believe in.

I wish more people would be "Apatheists". I get tired of people bashing religion. Personally, if someone's religion isn't harming anyone, and it focuses on doing good deeds, can anyone openly insult it when it does nothing to harm the world? Sure, some religions do bring suffering to others, whether it's suicide bombing infadels or going door to door, but not all.

For me, I'm "Protestant". I like getting divorices and trying to get sons (not really.) But I also support Norse Mythology. It's weird, I believe Norse Mythology to be fake, but I still conceive it, like I would a video game, or a book. I can't reallly discribe it.

The sooner people stop insulting other people based on religion (or anything), the better.

number1: I have given the option "deist" in my poll.

number2: check your definitions. just emerged from 5 years studying of philosophy and theology. I'm fairly concrete on how I define atheism in an academic sense - though i agree with future postings about how this is the escapist forums and not a journal. razz.

number3: i really do not need this in my life. I can't really argue this as you don't know me, but just trust me on this :)

just testing the water with a little hypothesis ^__^ tell me to shut up and I will, but discussion is oh-so-much fun isn't it?

EDIT:

All fair enough, but you missed my first point and then just said you studied philosophy for 5 years. If you didn't care about Deity/Religion etc. then why on earth would you study it???

The point I am making is that by creating a discussion on a subject then surely it means something to you?

The internets are always seeming to be antireligious/atheist, and as shown, atheism is tied. Lol no deists? Come on now.

I was with you until you rejected the notion of what is called anti-theism, not to be confused with atheism. It's not anti-god, it's anti-religion. See also Chris Hitchens.

You see, atheism is what the OP has described; though he clearly thinks the definition of atheist is anti-theist.

The truth is in the nomenclature.

A = Without

Anti = Against

yeah i had nothing to say about your first point ^^ guess i must care a bit. but more aboot classification than content.

eh, the study of it from a secular point of view is kinda fun. it's like history crossed with english lit.

Oh I just love how you labeled all of us as arrogant.

Interesting viewpoint. I'm going to guess there are a lot of people who don't care about religion in any way, shape or form these days. The only problem is that many atheists label themselves as non-caring; not that they don't believe in god, they just don't care. Apathetic atheism, I guess. I, myself, am an agnostic. Why, may I ask, do you not care? I mean, many people formulate opinions on things they do not care about; why not?

I used to be atheist, but I realized one day that saying, "there is absolutely no god" is ignorant, considering that, to know this for certain, one would require omniscience, and to be omniscient, you would have to become a god, making your original statement false anyway.

I don't know what to answer in the pole: I sorta believe there is a higher power, however I don't think that every little insignificant or huge action we do is influenced by said higher power.

I am not even sure which one of these poll questions I would choose. You could technically call me a Christian, but I am not overly zealous or a church-goer. In fact, my beliefs are constructed and sculpted from many other different belief systems, so that the end result of my religion is not any accepted denomination. If anything, my beliefs are a way to scientifically explain the existence of God and spirituality.
