So do the APB adverts on this site annoy you or not?

I really can't stand them since they play on a loop and a lot of the time cause my adobe plugin to crash (firefox), which then freezes my browser for a few minutes until I get the error message. Which is awesome when you're trying to watch a video on the site and have it freeze then have to refresh it, sometimes multiple times per video.

I wouldn't mind if they played the ad once and then it stopped, but no it plays on a loop and opens full screen if you accidentally pan over it.

And even before I finished this post the damn thing crashed again and guess which ad has the error message on it?

Firstly I have no idea what your talking about.
Secondly Buy an account or put up with the ads. Nothing is truly free.

I dont mind ads generally, and of course , we can always throw a small fee to the Escapist for premium membership, but yeah, not just APB, I find any ad that expands to fill the screen annoying, just because you went near it.

Add to that list any ad that plays sound, I actually find myself appreciating ads that say 'click here to listen' as they show some respect for the audience/potential customer.

As for APB, offer a free trial as most MMOs do, and I'll maybe sign up, however, I'm not paying £35 to test it out. It's not like most games, as if I decide I want to try it again a few months later, I'll have to pay again. That's why I don't mind buying most games based on reviews etc and not an insistance on having a demo. I can both go back any time and play again, or sell it. Not an option with pay per month MMOs.

It's a shame as I really like the concept and I'd love to play it.

I don't mind ads in general - there's a bunch of other ones on this site I'm fine with (360 slim one, tesco etc). But I DO mind ads that crash my browser and appear fullscreen when they are only meant to do that after scrolling over for 3 seconds (it jumps the gun a lot)

Also I don't see the point paying $20 a year just to remove ads (I wouldn't use any of the other membership stuff)

So the problem is your Browser/computer, not the add itself. Otherwise we would have heard similar things from others suffering the same problem. Soo... well this kind of invalidates this thread. Maybe you should change the title and ask for some tech help.

How exactly does me explaining how this ad annoys me invalidate the question "Does the ad annoy you?" - I have seen people complaining about it before on other threads, so it is an opinion out there (at the moment even split between people annoyed and not in this poll, most of annoyed people going for more violent option)

I'm not asking for tech support here because it is only that ad causing a problem and albeit it annoying I can live with it

Also from your first post I'm guessing you have a membership and can't see the ads so no offence but how can you have an opinion on an ad you can't see?

Why don't you try Opera Browser, the reason Firefox crashes is because its a feature creep so its fragile like Windows, I have no problems with anything on this site using an 8 year old laptop and Opera.

Its not the adverts that are fucking anything up, its the fragile plugins on Firefox.

I haven't seen any APB ads, but I've been getting a lot of Starcraft 2 ads.

I don't mind them really. Its much better than previous other ads.

Nope, I paid so I didn't have to see so much adverts. Some of them can be rather annoying from memory though, and do sometimes eat away and slow down things. Try Chrome or Opera, it's pretty good.

If they didn't have crappy ads that do stuff like that, I wouldn't block ads (or at least Flash) in the first place. But they do, so I do, and they end up making less money than they would've if they'd accepted lower-paying but less irritating ads. And no, I'm not going to disable Flashblock/ClickToFlash just so people can make money by irritating me, especially on a laptop, because it lowers my CPU use enough to give me at least an extra hour of battery life. If people can't be bothered to figure out how to do non-terrible advertising, I can't be bothered to let their ads onto my computer.

Not as bad as the fucking Starcraft II one at the top that expands. Fuck that noise.
Hell to the yes I second this motion. Any ad that "expands" when you get near it is like a homeless guy who starts following you asking you for change on the street and doesn't leave you alone until you pay attention to them.
When it comes to SC2, I already see ads all over the web and I think Blizzard can calm down on that already. I'm pretty confident that everyone knows the game is coming out, so take five on the ads. I can sort of understand why APB needs to advertise since it is an MMO that doesn't have a huge advertising budget, but those rollover ads are really just annoying as a crying baby on a plane. You want to ignore them, but if you get close, then they immediately want to annoy you personally.

I can see what you are saying, that if you pay some money then the ads are disabled. But why did you start by saying you didn't know what they were talking about, then offer advice that was related to the problem if you didn't know about it? No offense, TheComeDown, but I dislike when people comment on a thread to say they know nothing about it. If you truly don't know, then people please don't waste comment space by admitting your ignorance on the subject. It doesn't help and just makes you look foolish.

to be honest the APB one doesn't bother me. the one from nissan is a lot more annoying as it doesn't start when it should. it tends to play when I've paused a movie. when I try to resume I get the nissan advert first. that is a bit annoying.

Nope, it doesn't annoy me at all. I use Firefox & have had no crashes because of it. As stated by previous posters on this thread it's actually quite innocuous & unobtrusive compared to a lot of other advertisements.
