I'm just curious, as a fan of board games and someone who seeks out new games that come out as well as keeping on investing in the classics, where does everyone else stand on the subject?

Chess and go will never die if you ask me. Not the board games you had in mind, likely, but still board games.

Well yes, but i'd put chess and go in a very different category to say Risk or Monopoly or Life

Once every blue moon I play Lord of the Rings Edition Risk with my Dad, and my nephew loves playing Candyland. But I can't say I ever see myself buying one at the store, and they're certainly nowhere near as popular as they were a couple decades ago.

I play them every now and then. Most certainly not as popular as they used to be though.

At least card games continue to be popular!

I'll play Trivial Pursuit, occasionally.

Otherwise, I'm not much into the classic franchises, which're essentially games of chance.

The only physical games I've considered buying lately were card games such as Munchkin and Dominion.

However, considered is the word, really. It's too much money for something I'll hardly ever convince people to play, in all honesty, when I could just play a game with a normal deck of cards.

I play Risk and Monopoly frequently with friends with games lasting hours and are often memorable for my lifetime.
I have also played the never released Warlords: Battlecry boardgame and have to say that it was some of the most fun I have had with a board game, It is a disappointment to myself, my classmates and probably most of the boardgame/gaming community that it has not been published (and might not, either, despite protests)

As everyone said, they are certainly not as popular as they used to be, but, like wargames and role-playing games, they still have their own significant niche audiences, so they are not going anywhere, for the time being. I would play more board games if A: I had the money to afford them, and B: I could actually get together with my friends to play them.

They're anything but dead, actually. Just visit any 'geek store' near you and you'll probably find dozens of IPs you never heard of.

Personally, I like board games where one sessions lasts several hours or even a day. If you are similarly inclined you might want to check out Twilight Imperium, Vampire: Prince of the City, and possibly Tannhäuser. I also remember the Age of Mythology board game being fun.

I like some boardgames
But people in my generation honestly don't have the attention span to play a game that lasts possibly hours without it being on a computer screen

I enjoy the occasional Risk, and Lego Creationary (much fun), as well as Settlers of Catan.

I played Futurama monopoly yesterday.
It was more expensive to buy than any video game I've bought. (And I live in Australia)

My favorite game, Diplomacy, is a board game. If you haven't heard of Diplomacy you owe it to yourself to check it out. It's kinda like Risk except far more strategical, social, and has no luck elements.

I haven't found a table top Dungeons and Dragons yet. My friends and I were going to start but problems occur.

Board games are live and well. I'm not talking about Monopoly rereleases, I'm talking about games like Arkham Horror, Dominion, Agricola, Small World, and plenty more. Honestly, I find that there's more innovation and better design gameplay-wise in board games than there is in video games as long as you look at boardgamegeek.com or somewhere similar.

Modern board games are designed to be replayed, unlike most modern non-multiplayer video games. Though the themes and the stories are quite a bit more tenuous than most video games, the fact that mechanics are the major thing that board games are sold on is a very big deal.

Pretty much. The last time I play those was when I was back in High School (Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox era). I no longer got the board games with me.

Nowt wrong with board games. My 18th birthday present from my folks was a bespoke chess set (although the passage of time has taken its toll on it), and whenever my tabletop RP group is missing a couple of members we haul out games such as Game of Thrones (a Risk type affair but set in Westeros), Arkham Horror (Cthulhu mythos game), Battlestar Gallactica, Doom (yes there is a board game version), and so on.

But only because my group (s wallets) learned long ago not to let me bring out the poker set...
