I'm curious what this forum's take on this subject. I'm a sequential arts major, so obviously, we know what i think. I'd like to see some justification for your opinions, but I suppose its not a requirement, Anyways, yeah, are comics art?

If you have to think about whether something is or isn't art, then it most definitely is art.

The very existence of Frazer Irving and Frank Quitely means an instant 'yes'.

Some large images ahead.

Fuck guys like Jim Lee and Ed Benes with their hyper-sexualised trash, this is where it's truly at with comics.

edit: How could I forget an artist like JH Williams III?! Shocking!

Story-telling with illustrations, both of which have individually been accepted as art.
So yes! Though I wouldn't suggest all comics are art, in the same way I wouldn't say all books or paintings necessarily qualify as art.

Comparing the Beano to Watchmen would be like comparing The Da Vinci Code to East of Eden, or my finger paintings from when I was 5 to Monet's Water Lilies.

Man its gratifying to hear all of this! I had a rather large fight with a few members of my family over my major, and am still fighting two years later, so its nice to hear all of this! Really though, its kind of surprising. Also, out of curiosity, what's ya'll favorite artists as far as comics go?

I am pretty sure all aspects of comics (story, drawing, etc) are art. So unless there is something like "three lefts make a right" but with combinations of art, comics are art.

It's no less artsy than painting and literature. In fact, it should technically be as artsy as both combined! Now, the only comics I've really read are Watchmen, V for Vendetta and Calvin and Hobbes, but I'd consider all of them art. Also, all of them are great. I haven't read more comics because I've heard these are some of the best examples of them, and I don't want to be disappointed.

Read Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics", he's got quite an explanation on why comics is an art form.
Great book, read it in my first year of uni. Part of the reason I stayed in my major. I think it should be required reading for anyone who wants to do comics.

Everything can be considered art if you put hard work into it.

A car is art

A table is art

Hell, put a bit of work in it, a poop can be considered art.

So yes, comics art art...along with poop.

XD

All comics are art. Honestly, if a painting of a Campbell's soup can is considered art, so is (blech) Final Crisis. At its very best, when striking visuals come together with beautifully written prose, it can be more moving, to me, at least, than an entire evening in the most highly renowned art museum.

PS: My crack on the Campbell's soup can is in no way an invitation to discuss the flaws and merits of the works of Andy Warhol.

Anything can be art: paintings, movies, music, nature, food, comics, video games, technology, sports, murder, sex, a witty remark, all of these can be made into art. If it can be made, it can be art. Art must trigger an emotional response to be art, be it joy, sorrow, anger, pity. For example the main emotion I get from comic books is frustration, because they don't know when to end, or at least restart, and keep anyone interested out in the cold.

Hey now, let's not say things we can't take back in the future.

There are plenty of comics that end.

Comics may or may not be art, it would vary depending on the individual item, same as everything else.

Why do only some parts of a medium get to be art? Who decides that?

I do.

Seriously, though, surely you cannot speak of all parts of a medium collectively being art or not. Whatever the medium, I could find (or, failing that, make myself) examples better described as rubbish than art. Yes, this is very subjective, but then anything to do with art is.

So you, and only you gets to decide what is, and what isn't, art? Does that not seem a little unfair? Imposing your subjective restrictions upon other people? Does it not make sense that, since no single person can state what is and isn't art within a given medium, that it is all art? With the bits that you personally consider art to actually be your ideas of good art within the medium?

To impose such subjective restrictions is insanity, considering the number of different viewpoints available.
