Is it just me, or does it seem like newer games have been made shorter and shorter over the years.

I think its more that campaigns are starting to become second fiddle to the multiplayer, which is a little saddening

Definitely. It's a shame, really, they cost more money and give you less of a return.

Oh, and Furburt, you're almost at 3K posts! [sub]treacherous bastard, leaving us 2K guys behind...[/sub]

yep but it's logical they cost alot more time and money to make.
Wouldn't it mean that they should last a lot LONGER than the cheap and quick games?

It depends on the genre. If you're talking about FPS games, probably. If you're talking about RPGs, probably not.

Depends on the game you're looking for.

Most of them, I'll say yes, but that's not necessarily a 'bad' thing.

Personally, there's always people, (ie: me) who will squeeze every last drop out of the game, with 500+ hour saves in Fallout 3, multiple replays and speed runs of Mirror's Edge until you have the routes down perfect, getting a mod to increase level cap to 999 in Torchlight and spending forever in the Shadow Vault, playing the multiplayer of an FPS that had a ~10 hour campaign for 400 hours, etc.

But for the average player, I would say, yes, the main story modes are getting shorter (Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc.), but for the average player, maybe it will seem like less daunting a task to get involved in a new game if you know that you have a chance to actually beat it before another one you wanted comes out.

Depends on the game really. But i would have to say yes to some, and no to other. For example:
The early 90's - Kid Chamleon taken me fucking ages.
late 90's/20's - Saving and checkpoints where a must for pretty much all games, so now i could put the pad down and make the gameplay seem like longer. (Also replay value)
Some long ass games being made later on, such as GTA's, Call of Dutys and birth of more realistic games which are bound to last longer than an average game (Gran Trurismos, rollercoaster typhoons etc)

no, cuz they're trying to make the graphics even more realistic and every little pebble on the way has to have character.

It seems to me like alot of games are becoming shorter, but the only reason that I think developers make them shorter is because they want to focus more on multiplayer.

Some yes, some no.

Yes, MW2 obviously and maybe L4D2, I don't actually know as I've yet to buy it.
No is Forza 3, Dragon Age: Origins and Borderlands if you look around and go looting.

But it does seem to have shortened considerably since about 2002.
But as long as they're good campaigns, I don't mind too much.

Yeah i reckon that a lot of games seem to be getting shorter, but the shortest games that i know are some of the best (Prince Of Persia, Portal, Jak II) . Quality not quantity i guess!

I have noticed this mostly with FPSs, they have never been the longest games out there but really the fact that ODST and Modern Warfare 2 can be beat in one sitting is just retarded, they are less then 5 hours long
