I am not arachnophobic myself, but I really dislike spiders a lot. At the same time, it fascinates me how different reactions people have to these creatures. So let's explore, why are they so creepy, if you think they are.

I'm not scared of small spiders. Bigger ones actually might pose a threat and be difficult to kill, and therefore, I dislike them.

I'm not really arachnaphobic either but I don't want to get bitten by a spider, especially if they're venomous.

If they have big fangs and are extremely aggressive, then that's a different story...

Little spiders don't freak me out as much because I can't really see them clearly enough to know what a freak of nature they are.

::shudders::

Their spindly legs freak me out. Their eyes freak me out. Their mandibles freak me out. Their bulbous bodies freak me out. They have no right existing in a sane universe (which probably only proves that the universe is insane).

::shudders::

My girlfriend is even more freaked out about them, so I have to kill them, which means getting close to them.

::shudders::

Apparently our fear of bugs is entirely a result of social conditioning. Kids will be absolutely fine playing with bugs at a young age, but when friends or adults start going "OMG A SPIDER, EVERYONE GET OUT OF THE HOUSE" they suddenly become something to be feared.

No, pain and death are scary. I am wary of spiders because I respect their ability to kill me. But then again I live in Australia so you really don't get to a ripe old age of 20 here without a little respect for the ability of things to kill/maim you.

Personally, jumping spiders are the cutest things ever. Something about those large, beady, puppy dog eyes.

I'm not too sure about that... To me it seems for like something that would act cute and cuddly, only to be found eating your feet later that night....

I try not to be afraid of spiders, but when I suddenly notice one on my arm/whatever I freak out, at least until I have got the spider off me. For me it is definitely the way they move, and I don't really know why it gets to me. If I have noticed a spider I have no problem picking it up, or ignoring it, it's just when it takes me by surprise.

As for the people who actually kill them, that's just cruel. It's not the fault of the spider that people find it scary.

Urgh... They're always watching with those 8, black, soulless pits.
They have far too many legs and the way they move is just awful. It makes it look as if they're moving a hell of a lot faster than they actually are.

My grandad started my dad's phobia I think, with his stories of the monstrous spiders that he'd encountered during his time in the desert campaign of WW2. My dad's always hated the things and I have too.

I don't fear them, but neither do I like them. If you leave them alone, then usually, they'll leave you alone.

depends entirely on the spider.

-I used to have a pet wood spider with seven legs... his name was Lucky.

-seriously, that breed of camel spider is not venomous, and tends to be more harmless than a kitten. They do run pretty fast, though.

-I've killed a lot of those in my time...

They look creepy and invade my house. GET YOUR OWN HOUSE YOU LAZY SPIDER!

Also waking up to find a spider on your face is really damn scary.

I'm not afraid of them, much like I'm not really afraid of any bugs. They can STARTLE me (especially when I find them ON me), but they don't SCARE me. Besides, In my household at least, the large Wolf spiders actually eat smaller spiders, so I don't have to worry about poisonous ones so much.

Spiders and me have this little agreement. If they're willing to just sit on my walls, eat bugs and not bother me, then they're free to do so, but if they mess with me or my stuff, then I crush them.
