So I was reading this article ( http://www.forbes.com/sites/tarabrown/2012/03/26/dear-fake-geek-girls-please-go-away/ ) and found it really interesting, so I thought I would share it with you lovely people. Here's a quick summary (copy and paste chunks) of the article:

"Lately I've been thinking a lot about what it was like for me being a geeky girl growing up and what it's like for geeky girls nowadays. It's a totally different world. Now, a geek is synonymous with anyone who has an Internet connection. When I was growing up being a geek wasn't something you wanted advertised but you felt pride in knowing that you were really good at something or were a subject matter expert on something obscure.

I thought being called a geek meant you liked something so much that you were willing to forgo social outings and popularity. That still seems to be the case, but the once coveted term is now being used as a marketing gimmick, and those who truly deserve the label are lost in the noise.

Maybe it's just something that Generation X'ers lament about, as many of us old-timers believe that when it was harder to learn about something and you did it anyway, when no one else was building that computer in the basement but you persevered, that's when your passions really shined through. That?s what being a geek is. Now if someone sticks a video game into their XBOX 360 console, they self-label themselves a "gamer." "

There is a cute chart on page one of the article, where you can find out if your a dork, geek, nerd, or dweeb. This article got me thinking about are there really fakes? Like a fake geek and a real geek, fake gamer and real gamer, fake nerd and real nerd, and so on. I know there has always been the argument over fake gamers and real gamers from time to time, like casual gamer and gamer. I never thought it would be over being geeky and nerdy. Does it even matter if someone is really a geek verses a fake geek? Or is this article a rant of a geek snobbery? Tell me form what do you think?

Why is this just aimed at `fake` girls?

Just being interested in games to get attention from men is an accusation I myself (and probably many other female gamers) have had to deal with on several occasions. I really don't think we need the same from fellow female geeks, it just makes the problem worse.
Not to mention I don't know what they are on about. Yeah, I get guys in game shops being nice to me, but in the online world, being female does not do you any bloody favours. All you (generally) get is harrassment.

Yeah, it might be annoying if a `fake` female gamer goes "Woo, look at me gaming!" but honestly who cares? It doesn't annoy me and its certainly not as annoying as having to `prove` myself every time I have to interact with another member of the gaming community purely on the basis of what is between my legs.

I'm less annoyed by fake gamers than elitist ones who insist you prove your geek pedigree.

I'm going to vote snobbery cause this kind of shit just pisses me off. We're not doing ourselves any favours here, ladies.

This whole thing doesn't really bother me. I don't see why we need to label each other anyways why can't we just be ourselves without needing to group each other.

What's with the way everyone seems to have a love affair with labels? Labels DO NOT WORK to describe behavioral or cultural patterns. There is too much minor variation. This sort or obsession over them isn't healthy.

reality check: personal and cultural Labels are some of the most disgusting fallacies out there.

I don't wanna call people "fake" gamers but I have seen sooo many people who think they're so much better than they are. Sometimes, you just gotta know what your level is at.

Also, I have yet to have my arse handed to me by a girl gamer. I'm still waiting for that day and from the looks of it sadly, I still have a lot more waiting to do ._.

^Generally in an MMO I find that girls get special treatment such as "hey, I can give you some great items!" and "I can help level you up!"

Whilst on other "hardcore" games girls just get the more sexist treatment. "Back to the kitchen, etc." I could be very wrong about an actual girl's experience but at least that's what I've noticed.

Oh, no, of course they are wrong. To be a gamer, you have to first submit your application to the gaming board and get a letter or recommendation of at least three other gamers. Then the senior members of the board, whose names can never be pronounced (they have all those funny characters and numbers there) review the applications and only what they deem worthy can go to the high fragalot who has the final say.

How dares somebody, who merely has a gaming console and uses it for gaming call themselves a gamer?! This is an offence and they would quickly be dealt with - the Secret Enforcers of Gaming Authority take care of them.

By which I mean it's total bullshit. And who the fuck even cares if some geek females are "fake". Who the hell even wants to fake geekness? And for what? Fake geeks tend to not do fairly well among other geeks, so even if you mislabel yourself, it doesn't mean much.

EDIT: forgot to mention - I voted "Geek Snobbery Article"

It always seems that way, the girls always making the fake vs "real" articles. I myself see this whole article as snobby rather then making a point. Yet like I said that little chart is kind of cute even thought it's just enforcing stereotypical labels on everyone. Seems like the author of the article came in contact with someone she would see as "fake" and went on a rant.

Labels are concise. Would you rather people replace each one-word label with a slightly more accurate paragraph or three of text?

Complaining about labels isn't that much above complaining about words themselves. Yeah, not a perfect way of communicating all necessary information, but unless you know any telepaths I think we're stuck with them.

Really?
I've been MMO-ing for some time and I've never had anybody say anything like that.
The only special treatment I've ever gotten is the whole get-back-to-the-kitchen routine, followed by the assersion I must be unfuckable if I play games or I must be a dude in disguise.
Stay classy, dudes.

stuck with them? yes. yes we are.
however, taking them as gospel is ridiculous. As vague generalities they are fine, but they are overused as classifications of groups.

EDIT: in my opinion, accuracy is far more important than the ability to be concise.

Yeah, that's pretty much true. On both points, except generally if you say something non-concise people stop listening.

To be honest, I think we've reached the point where the 'definition' of almost every label is subjective. I can't say I entirely agree with the concept of slapping labels on people to categorize them more effectively, though.

I am what I am, I like what I like, I don't need a title to support what I (and the people who matter to me) already know. :3

Dear Sir,
Here is my application to be a gamer, also my 3 recommendations letters. Also I put the numbers 1337 near my name, cause I'm awesome. <3

Who cares if people only have shallow depth of expertise or passing interest in something that they like? People will respond to the things they enjoy to the degree that feels right to them. Should anyone really be surprised that there are immature and attention-seeking people out there? This problem isn't limited to "geek culture" or whatever. It's a hobby, not a competition.

Yep, can't stand the:
"OMG I PLEY MARIO CART, I SUCH A GAMUR" or "LOL I PUT MEMOREY IN MY COMPOOTER, SUCH A GEEK"

Why? Because it makes them look like an ass when I then try to talk to them about games or geek related things and they don't have a god damn clue "Steam? Like the uh, gas?" Yea, someone actually said that once after claiming to be a gamer.

It's just annoying more than anything, people DO label, because it helps to identify people who share the same interests, like I might label someone who likes football a football fan, but just because I've watched a few games, doesn't mean I would claim to be. I don't even know any of the teams, and would just look like an ass if someone were to try and talk to be about it.

Of course there are, there always are, the real question is, Why should we care?
I mean they aren't hurting anybody so I don't really think anyone should care at all.

Yup, as I said, fake geeks don't do well among real ones. A few such rounds and they usually either drop the whole label or just start to live up to it.

People who took abuse for the label and then had to deal with "geekyness" being the "in" thing and subsequently being ignored whilst people who aren't geeky at all get the attention.

That's not my view but it is clear from the article it is what they think.
I got abuse for it (still sometimes do), I dont begrudge `fake` gamers.
Though I cant say I've ever met one, just been accused of being one and heard of other people who have heard of them.

That's exactly the kind of attitude that I think makes gaming a much less welcoming environment for girls. The girls that are stuck into it I have some real respect for cos they gotta put up with all this BS. But... like I mentioned earlier, I haven't met any online yet (xbox-wise).

Also, I tried playing as a girl character once on top of another guy character in an MMO and people were giving the special treatment (helping) every single time. I got private messages, from presumably guys, that kept asking my real name and stuff. It was kinda fun to string them along then -BAM- I whack 'em over the head with the truth and I tally another one up on the chalkboard. (This as when I was super bored)

I bet you probably have encountered a female gamer but they didn't talk on voice. I never do on Xbox precisely because of the treatment you can get. I mean, some guys are nice and don't care about it or make a big deal of it.
But others will make a HUGE deal. Either good or bad.
Bad is the sexist stuff, good is when they treat you like its freaking AMAZING that you are female and manage to hold a controller. I prefer the good, obviously.

And perhaps all the dudes playing as girls is why I dont get free stuff. All the dudes are taking it. Lol.
