I remember the days when games took days to beat, and there was less need for story. Nowadays, I find myself playing Left 4 Dead just so I can beat other human players. I think they used to be more fun when the game had an extremely hard challenge that you'd need to build a strategy for. Old RPG's like Fire Emblem were the peak of RPG gaming. Now, we've got Fallout, Final Fantasy (don't get me wrong, the early FF games were pretty good), and other stuff. What do you guys think about this?

oh hell yes. with the advent of the wii, games have become more accessable to casual gamers, so all developers are making games easier to make them more accessable to these casual gamers. just look at fable 2

I have only played a few old games but all of those are a lot harder then any game with graphics that doesn't make your eyes bleed.

When people say games are easier they really mean games dont have near impossible bullshit walls that old games used to have because they were designed off of the arcade mentality of making people eat up quarters...those things were'nt fun. I dont want to go back to those days.

They are a lot easier now then they were before for example most games now days I can beat the game on the hardest difficulty no problem, but if I went back in time and put the skills I have now onto the games of the past, I wouldn't get close to the hardest difficulty. Beating easy would be a challenge in itself.

Even if games nowadays are getting easier, there seems to be more difficulties, so eventually you get a difficulty where you're fighting off a zombie horde with a packet of peanuts.
I'm not really bothered bothered by difficulty though, as long as it's fun to play.

They're easier now, people used to have more patience in gaming, now, most gamers have some form of ADD.

Games nowadays are too easy...it's not fun anymore. Except for L4D Survival mode. That's hardcore.

Well.

Fallout 1 - Quite hard.

Fallout 3 - Peace of piss.

I reckon the sequels are becoming easier, not general games. For instance...

Fable - Fable II

Fallout 1 and 2 - Fallout 3

Burnout Xbox Series - Burnout: Paradise

I could go on. I might, lemme think of more titles...

This. This x1000. I've still found games that make me chew on controllers in frustration, but old games felt harder because of arbitrary shite, and that was less FUN.

Yes they are easier, it's to appeal to a larger audience and I can't really fault them for that.

My biggest complaint is that "Hard" mode often isn't hard at all, make easy mode easy, make normal mode easy if you want, but please god please make HARD mode HARD.

Perhaps Miyamoto's new patent will bridge the gap between the core audience and part timers and create a new third way?

Watch out for that in an official thread I am making for those videos, should be interesting.

Yes older games held alot of challenges were as new games (Fable 2) can be beaten by holding down the cast magic button for a while. Can't think of any new games with a hard challenge owell :(

It depends on how far back you're willing to look, naturally, but I'd definitely say that they're way easier nowadays due to several mechanics that were introduced at one point or other. Just think about how our old pals Save Game and Difficulty Adjustment change things whenever they're present.

I notice that the strategy-based RPG games are still hard. Ones like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion are ridiculously easy, even when you've only watched a friend play, then tried it out one day. (I know this from experience). I still love the challenges from Fire Emblem- When I was playing the Sacred Stones, I lost half of my party trying to complete an optional mission... something about pirates. It was 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure I can do better now.

I agree, games are getting easy to the point of being more boring than they're worth..

Abe's Odysee for example took me a good few days to complete, the sequel took me a few hours since I just quick saved on every screen.

Make the games in a way where you can have a walk down easy street or a 16 hour raging war against impossible odds! I do NOT want more thick, dim witted AI clones making the game harder. I want enemies that pose a challenge, not slow me down slightly.

I think a compromise is needed between the people who play games for a challenge and people who want to turn on a game, pop some "mad trixxx" or gun down some hoes for a bit of a laugh.
