First of all, your post turned out to be a nice read(you let some steam out and made some valid points).
Now for the more "On topic" stuff:
Initially I didn't consider it would have any benefit to be a dick online. But then I met this really edgy dude on this forums that was a "realist" and often offended people even though he didn't always have valid arguments(I don't want to talk about him any more because he's gone now).
Everyone(well some people) gave him attention and considered he was "cool"!(he always was on the borderline of probation and banned). Back then I was an attention whore, so I wanted to be as "cool" as that guy.
And troll I did(for a few days). I was an ass but not such a big one as to get negative attention. Then I did the most stupidest thing one could do: troll the big boss himself, Russ Pits. Weird enough I only got a warning and that made me feel really ashamed. I mean I insulted this good man(actually some work of his) for no good reason. What did he ever do to me?
Then I cleaned up my act and became as nice of a person as I am in real life(I'm no saint, but I doesn't hurt to be a good guy every once in a while)

To sum things up my life ideology is:"If you're a jerk, you attract jerks that make fun of you. If you're a nice fellow then probably you'll accidentally make someone feel less bullied around."

I'm not entirely sure what it means to "troll" because, whenever I think I've grasped it, someone uses it in a way that doesn't quite fit and I don't know if I've understood it wrong or if the person is just using the term out of context.

So, I'll just interpret the question as "are you a dickhead?"

Why yes, yes I am, both online and offline- depending, of course, on my mood.

Also, while I do believe there is a line that shouldn't be crossed, I think that a lot of the crap people say in-game is just harmless fun. Call me immature (because I am) but I find comments about peoples' mothers and other such childish insults, such as teabagging, rather amusing. Sure it might look bad to the non-gaming community, but I think they might be taking things too seriously, and if people suddenly stopped being racist, sexist and generally moronic in WoW general chat, for example, I think it would actually take away from the game.

Also, I don't know what games you've been playing but how do people even know you're a girl? I have hardly ever gotten any nonsense for being a girl because I don't advertise it. In fact, there's a lot of freedom in people thinking you're male 'cause you can say insensitive crap and no one thinks anything of it, and their insults can't touch you because they're directed at who they think is a male. They inevitably end up saying something along the lines of "dude, stfu" or "go get laid" and this makes trolling other people even more fun because they have it so completely wrong. They don't know who they're up against so they don't know how to tailor their insults.

That's just my two cents.

I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

Now if you get in my face physicaly you'll be picking your teeth up off the floor.

Trolling in real life is way more fun. No substitute for watching someone's face twisting with rage as you walk off after a nasty passing comment or just correcting them.

I might be a little confrontational online which can't be tempered with suitable body language but I'm far less likely to go out of my way to upset someone.

Yours truly once said something very wise:

As a result, people treat me better online (mostly) and I try to do the same to others.

I pretty much act the same when I am online and offline. Whenever I play online I always make sure to mute everyone I am playing against so I don't have to listen to them.

...but then there are annoying kids. And when I'm playing an M-rated title online and someone who's voice hasn't changed yet logs in and starts saying "WHY DIDN'T YOU _______?! GOD!" I begin trolling on them, kinda like, on behalf of the team.
this ^
i troll on those foolish enough to sound like ten, while playing M rated games.
if they are ten, and keep their high-pitched voices to themselves, then they are just one more enemy/ally

I am just as polite but far more inclined toward lashing out online, I've noticed. I guess the anonymity gives me the courage to get madder quicker. I guess I should work on that, hm?

I don't troll online as I don't see the value of it. Just seems a bit pointless, now if I'm playing a fps and we're all having a few competitive, "ye fecking bastard haha!", because the person killed me and its mutual, who cares. But that isn't trolling.

It also helps when you play with friends, therefore they know you're not trying to insult them, rather to just play the game and have fun.

While I haven't been a troll to any general person, I have caught myself being a smart ass. Still my saving grace is that I do have a strict policy to never reply on to a stupid argument or forum topic no matter how much I need to vent. Believe me though ignoring it is easier said that done.

Assuming everyone is being truthful, the results are interesting. There are a significant number of non-troll types, and a few dabblers. The few true-trolls have more or less announced themselves.

Well I suppose I am better online, I help out people on my online game, try to create strategies on other games, etc... but there are just some instances where I just explode. I don't act like a 12 year old though going ha ha noob fag fuck off I'm pimp, nah I present my argument in a clear way, and allow them to present a response. It's much more civil yet I somehow say just the right thing to piss the person off. XD

Love when these moments happen because everyone in my chat thinks me and the person are fighting even though they're fighting and I'm just laughing my ass off at their reactions to a comment that ticks nobody off but the person it's directed towards. Best example I can think of happened a couple of days ago, I was pointing things out and this kid just got really pissed off at me, threatened to beat my face in and what not, everyone else in the chat just went why is that getting a rise out of you? o.o...
