I've always thought "geek" was synonym with "nerd".
Actually, I still think so. Thou hath not converted Me!
Yay for individuality!

On a more serious note, I consulted Wikipedia and this is what I found;

Geek [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek] article:
The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, gaming, etc."

The terms nerd and dork have similar meanings as geek, but many choose to identify different connotations amongst the three terms, although the differences are disputed.
Nerd [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerd] article:
Nerd is a term often bearing a derogatory connotation or stereotype, that refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests that are age inappropriate rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. Therefore, a nerd is often excluded from physical activity and considered a loner by peers.
I continuously stick to my belief that nerd and geek are two sides of the same thing.
Don't be offended, though, Mr. OP, sir. Your thread is very nice.

The distinction I've always made between nerds and geeks is that nerds are more quiet and and geeks, at least amongst their own, tend to fail to shut up. Thus I am a geek.

I've heard a dork is actually the scientific name for the penis of a blue whale.
well my penis is as big as that of a blue whales, am i a dork?
If I had a penis the size of a blue whale's, I'd pick fights with guys in bars then whip out my huge penis and crush them to death. I'd think pants shopping would be hard though, also walking would be impossible.

Anyway, to answer your question I would say I am a nerd, as the term originally came from the word knurd which is drunk backwards and was used to refer to students too studious to drink. I would say that fits me pretty well.

I consider myself a total nerd, but by your description I fit more into the geek category...

Anyone who can follow my ramblings on biology gets major points though. And I've been known to use lengthy explanations of oxytocin as pick-up lines...

Not that they work or anything.

I'm a hybrid jock and geek I suppose. I was decent at school (B+ student), played MTG, loved games, but was Varsity in 3 sports and class president. So...I'm not sure what the hell that makes me...Gock? Jeek?

I'm a geek/nerd through and through by your definitions, though I frequently call myself a "Geek of All Trades" where as my Nerdity is pretty limited (History/Religious Studies/Mythology).

My geek of all trades label comes from my broad but fairly intense love of Anime, Movies, Music, Videogames, Pen'Paper RPGs, Comics, Genre Fiction and Television. I also have some really strange super-geeky things like being OBSESSED with Steampunk, Pulp and Alternate History.

My nerdity comes from my Religious History degree. I try to keep my academic knowledge up by regularly reading through historical materials and doing my own little research projects, though lately I'm more interested in Folklore, Ritual and Alternative Archeology then any serious historical field. My last serious historical research was into Imperial Germany (circa mid-late 1800's until WW1) and I haven't really done anything since then.

What's really bad is often my Geekery and my Nerdity will overlap and You'll get me going on about both at great length.

i am definitely a geek
im into anime, video games, metal, and am very smart.
but i rarely do any of my homework or pay attention in class. i would rather go off and do my own thing or learn on my own, plus i find homework and stuff absolutely meaningless if i have nothing to gain from it and already know all the stuff.

(YAY, my 100th post!)

At this moment I'd like to point out that this was my opinion and way of seeing things ;)

The main point was to see what you guys 'n' gals classed them as! The description I posted was what myself and my friends at Uni seem to have agreed upon.

I also don't really think a geek or nerd is a type of social clique, because that would mean that people who don't fit in with that style don't hang out with you, and you don't hang out with them! There has been many a time when I've gone out with people who have no taste in music and have no desire to talk about games etc, but I could just be at the age now where these social cliques lose relevance and youhang out with people because you like them :p

I'm a bit of both. I'm an avid gamer, but I'm in it for fun, not competition or powergaming. I like Doctor Who, which is sci-fi. However, I mostly like it for the witty writing, not for being sci-fi. I'm not a big fan of other sci-fi either, apart from Hitchhiker's Guide.

I kinda got fed up with school when I found out their focus was not to teach us things but to make us pass the next test. I did have some teachers who gave me some of their spare time to actually make me learn stuff.

I'm heavily into cult movies, slightly into cult books, have a fond interest in physics and mathematics. I'm often described as the absent-minded professor type. I finished my Maths final exam in 20 minutes and got top marks.

Oh, and I build robots as a hobby.

Is that geeky or nerdy?

Going by your definitions, I'm a geek. However, I chose both cause I find the two terms interchangeable, really.

I choose the terms "Hero", "Godlike figure" and "Stereotypical egocentric intelligent person". I do not particularly like the term Nerd or Geek for they limit my abilities. Last time I looked, I have expanded beyond your criteria.

Funny, the first terms that come to my mind when I read this are "Attention-seeking", "desperate" and "insecure".

geek: uses g33k speak 1ce and a while, we enjoy anime, weer more enthusiastc about video games than normal people, weer ok at school, if we havn't played an amazing computer game for more than a month we start getting edgy(w00t for game partays)

Nerd: good at school, goody two shoes, likes D&D, likes star trek, tucks in there shirts, sure they like games but not as muchand talk like there nose is plugged...and it sounds weird when they speak g33k speak

That is my logic

Geek. And I get slightly annoyed when people call me a nerd instead.

I'm a geek, and I'm (moderately) proud of it!
