Poll: Are you an only child?

The younger of two. Mah sister is five years older than me. We don't interact a whole lot, but we get along.

Fun fact: My Mom is a fraternal twin. When she tells people that she has a twin brother, people blink and ask with a straight face, "Are you identical?"

Because the Rugrats are scientifically accurate.

I'm an only child. Some people tell me, "Oh that's great, you get all your parents attention and you gets lots of things kids with siblings might not." But you know, while that might partially be true, it's also a very lonely feeling, too. You don't really have anyone that you can relate to, or feel close to in regard to family, or anyone you can really talk to about your parents/family who really GETS it.

Maybe I'm the only one, here, but there used to be times when I actually really resented my parents for not giving me the opportunity to have a sibling.

Outside of that last part I'd say this sums up what I would say.I've always had to entertain myself and I tend to avoid people.Don't know if being an only child is a cause of that or not.

I'm a middle child, with a Sister who is 1 year older and a brother who is 2 years younger. My brother and I used to fight a lot when we were younger but we haven't fought for years since we've grown up. We all usually keep to each other since we are pretty much a computer family (although my mother doesn't like it).

My sister doesn't give a crap about games, but my brother and I are both into PC gaming, and every once in a while we'll see a game that interests us both and co-op in it. It's pretty fun, but it bothers me that he'll get annoyed at things he shouldn't (such as deaths with no major penalties) and the blame eventually starts falling on me for seemingly no reason.

I'm the eldest of my two brothers. Even though were all about a year and a half to two years apart, we've almost always been mistaken for triplets. Of course these days it can be pretty easy to identify us, especially since I'm the only one with facial hair at the moment.

I am. When I was younger I wanted a sibling, mainly just to have someone else to play with, but that stopped around age 10. I started playing board games with stuffed animal stand-ins if my parents didn't want to play. And hey, that way I could never lose.

I'm used to it at this point, though. I love my roommates, but it is nice to be able to go home over Christmas and have it be just me.

Younger only to my brother, only 18 months apart.
Growing up in the "country," (the farmland of West Michigan) we didn't have that many friends close to us, so we became best buddies, although I was more subordinate. We share many of the same likes and dislikes and are quite chill with each other.
This reminds me that I'll be returning home on Saturday after a 6-week college program, and I can't wait to see my bro!

The youngest of three kids. It goes oldest sister, then older brother, then me, the baby of the family. I'm so glad I wasn't a single child, or else my younger, and current life would be a whole lot less interesting, and fun. Since we are really close, I fear the days when they move out on their own, since I will probably still live at home for the next two years or so, my university is just a ten minute drive away after all.

Am I considered an only child if my sister died before I was born? My sister lived 1970 to 1978 and I was born in 1990 so I'm either the younger of 2 or an only child.

Nothing is more lonely than standing in a crowd and being invisible/ignored; often what it feels like to be the middle child. The people are there; but not for you.

Not to mention just because they're family doesn't mean they will like you. Read this thread, plenty of siblings don't get along. That's how it is in my family, my brother and my sister don't get along with me, and it hurts. It's genuinely a detraction rather than the positive it could have been, and that hurts more than just fending for myself would have.

The thing about family is, they get to see the real you, and ... nobody is perfect, and ... most people have a hard enough time forgiving themselves... so... when people see your faults, your issues, your weaknesses? Instead of being the comforting/supporting/loving/caring people you expect from the movies? They're the opposite.

Only child. I really wish that I had a sibling or two, partially because I live in the middle of nowhere and it would be nice to have someone vaguely my age around, partially because they would take some of my parents' attention off of me, and partially because I'm terrified of being solely responsible for my parents' affairs and wellbeing.

Oh, also somehow, despite the fact that my dad has plenty of brothers and sisters, I'm somehow the only kid in the family and thus the last hope for carrying my family's legacy forward. Meanwhile, on my mom's side of the family, the only other only child (going back several generations) has the excuse of being six months old.

I only had one parent too though, so I wasn't too spoiled.

I have an older brother, and he's my best friend.
He still lives with the main family, which is probably strange for foreigners since at his age they're living in a flat or something.
We're pretty much inseparable on our off-days, because we're always gaming together, or watching films, or playing boardgames, or discussing what we just did in Planescape: Torment or System Shock 2 (thank you GOG) or something of that sort.

I'm an only child. My mother had a very traumatic birth experience (she had a real asshole for a doctor), and she didn't want to go through something like that again.

I've never really wanted a sibling or felt lonely (I guess you can't miss what you've never had). I handle solitude quite well in fact, and I have a number of friends and family members for socializing. I consider myself fortunate that I've (mostly) gotten along quite well with my parents. I still visit them on a fairly regular basis and consider them to be close friends as well as family. I'll admit that I'm a bit reserved around strangers, but I tend to get along with a wide variety of people.

3rd of 4, I was fairly independent and I never really got along with any of my siblings, my parents mostly ignored me, they didn't even really care if I didn't show up for days, while they made a fuss if one of my siblings was home slightly late or when my older brother set a couch on fire on purpose because he was bored and he got a hug and them asking if he was OK, while when I accidentally tripped on a candle and lit the bathroom and myself on fire and I got a slap in the face and them yelling at me for being an idiot...

I'm the eldest. Not just for my personal family, but for the entire family, both my father's and mother's side. Comes with a fuckton of pressure and lead me to being the damned guinea pig in terms of "How to raise a child."

My situation is FUBAR'd lol. I am adopted and supposedly I have a fraternal twin and a sister. I have no memory of them as I was taken away from my mom when I was 2 along with my Brother. We were sent to different families and our birth certificates were changed so that our adopted families were listed as our birth parents and the original copies destroyed. So I have no idea where they are and I know my biological mom died a few years ago but nothing more than that. Supposedly the guy listed on the original as my dad was dead before I was conceived so my adopted parents thought my mom just made up a name or something to fill in the spot. My adopted parents were much, much older than me. When I was 2 they were in their 60's. I grew up in the back woods of Virginia in the US so a lot of things were done then that wouldn't have happened today. They both died when I was 8 and their biological daughter took guardianship of me, she was 18 years older then I was so when I was 8 she was 26. She was my guardian until I turned 17 and joined the military after High School. So she technically is my older sister but more like my pseudo mom in reality.

Youngest, though I oft feel like an only child because my brother has his own life away from us (he IS 33) so it's usually just me and my mother.

However, I do feel like I get compared to him by my mum quite often because he is smarter, more intelligent, more productive, more impulsive and just plain better than me. Except for the "dudebro" parts, but they are negated by the fact that he isn't a fucking idiot.
