Okay this is something that's been bothering me for years but I've never really bothered to see if I am the only one.
My basic problem is this.
Every single menu choice you make in some games prompts a message to the effect of "are you sure?"
Of course I'm freaking sure, I wouldn't have clicked the damn thing if I wasn't!?!?!

I've always kind of thought of this as an insult to our intelligence as gamers.

The only thing that probably irritates me more are the games you have to back out through like 5 menus, then enter back into to actually quit the game properly (assassin's creed comes to mind)

Anyhow am I the only one that's annoyed by these persistent and needless messages?
I can't imagine that I am.
It's even worse in some older pc games where you must use the enter button instead of navigating the menu with the mouse.

Well.. the reason why these "needless" messages are there in the first place is to make sure you didn't just misclick it.
Like this; you are in the middle of a boss fight... suddenly you need to use a healing item, but for some reason you manage to hit the exit game button instead of the inventory after pausing the game. In that scenario it's good to have it, but I have to agree that most of the time it's useless and needless.

I'm a bit ambivilent about them. On the they're everywhere and if your in any hurry to get through the menu and in/out of the game it's super annoying. On the other hand, if your like me (read: an idiot) and often end up clicking the wrong thing, they can be a life saver.

I find it useful, what if i accidentally press the wrong button and be sent out of an important game, or be thrust into one? or have you game quit and have to start all over again from the start?

Its about 3 seconds of your life, it is hardly a high price to pay so the game can save you the inconvenience if you do press the wrong button, the warning message popping up is a smaller inconvenience than the latter.

I wouldn't say it's needless but it is freaking annoying.
Especially if you accidentally press no and it sends you back about 2 minutes worth of re-doing something...

Windows Vista. R U SHUR!?!?!?!?!? R U 4SRS SURE?!?!?!?

Most annoying thing ever is trying to run something and get a multitude of verifications on being certain that you know what you are doing.

Okay, maybe some people aren't as technically savvy as I am, but seriously? Thank God linux at least treats you like you know what you're doing.

Never really thought about it. In the few games with it, it's never bothered me. Probably not completely needed, but I'd say it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Yes vista does overdo it quite A LOT. Every single thing you click on, the screen goes black, and then the permission thing comes up...
Yeah it's so annoying that I only use vista for video games. Everything else I run through Ubuntu or Fedora, or whatever linux flavor of the month I feel like using.

Anyone remember the old Die Hard Trilogy game? It literally started arguing with you whenever you tried to quit the game.

Those messages have saved my ass in a game a few times when the mouse slipped.

And in Vista, I beat off a hacker who was slowed down by those annoyances. So they've made up for themselves.

One more great reason I don't use Vista. XD

I've grown accustomed to these needless little messages so they don't really bother me anymore. In fact, it throws me off when a game leaves them out. For example, in Donkey Kong 64 to save, all you need to do is press the "save" button. There's no "Are you sure you want to save" message that pops up, no "game saved" prompt afterward. All that happens is Donkey Kong says "OK" and it's saved. I did it like, nine times before I finally realized that it saved.

Disabling UAC will get rid of those messages in vista.
Which actually leads me to a thought I feel kind of silly for not having before..
why can't you turn off those prompts in the game options?

actually the save is a perfect example, especially for pc games where you pretty much have infinite slots and space for the saves.
Why are you asking me if I want to save?
like saving is going to hurt something1?!?!?!
maybe an are you sure is required when you risk overwriting a game, but that's not the case with many pc games. I finished fallout 3 with like 60 save games or something ridiculous like that...

There should be an option to say if you want messages to come up or not.

What I found even more annoying were games where there was an extra prompt for saving a game, but which switched the buttons around.

Are you sure you want to save the game?
Yes = X
No = Triangle
quickly followed by
Save game?
No = X
Yes = Triangle
I think I had to restart Mercenaries on PS2 about 3 or 4 times, because I hadn't saved my game when I thought I had.

I know I should have read the options more carefully, but I assumed it was the same as every other game on the PS2, and it just had to be different and fly in the face of convention.

There are few things worse than a bad interface. I don't need anything fancy, just functional. In fact, I DON'T want fancy, fancy is time consuming: I wanna do whatever I wanna do in the menu, and then keep playing. Bethesda is a criminal that pops to mind. Goddamn Pipboy.
