Yes; I know there was a thread about RickRolls; I'm taking it on a different route.

I have been RickRolled a lot recently.

From stations in Melbourne playing it (a tactic to get rid of hoodie gangs - it works), to Australian music quiz show Spicks and Specks playing it (unknowingly), to trying to watch recent game trailers on Youtube (you know what happened); but this morning, when I switched on my television, I recieved the most wacky Rickroll ever.

http://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/b/sunrise/18450/rick-astley-whos-the-best-music-act-of-all-time/

If you don't really like clicking links, I will tell you briefly what it says.

Basically, over 100 Million Europeans voted "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley to be the 'Best Musical Act Ever' at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008.

This seemed to have confused the guys on Sunrise, the morning breakfast show on Australian TV's Channel 7.

It seems that they were informed later of RickRolling, and the fact that 100 Million people got together to make the world's most epic RickRoll.

In any case, what do you think about this, or RickRolls in general? What about other forms of Pop Culture - A thing that, as it seems, the majority of Australians are oblivious to?

...the best musical act ever?

...I had faith in Europe. I really did. But no more. Even if it's a joke, things like that don't go down in history books as jokes!

Also, RickRolls are... meh. Lame. Groan-worthy. And what other forms of pop culture, exactly? I mean, not to be a facetious jerk but isn't almost everything we enjoy in entertainment pop culture? Is this limited to memes or what?

I was thinking more of pop culture references.

Also: Is it really that bad that I like the song?

Why would it be bad that you like it? It's a catchy song and Rick Astley is a good musician.

I like other forms of pop culture- obscure ones, like someone making a reference to the school in A Little Princess or something along those lines. They feel almost like tiny presents, given to those who will get it. Now, the blatant stuff (and, off the top of my head, I think... William Hung) is just effing annoying to me. We get it. It happened. Move on.

And... eeeh. The song isn't terrible, but I never cared for it, even before the RickRoll phenomenon began.

Like mkb07a already said, RickRolls are meh. Just totally unfunny and not worth the time. It's getting even worse now that the local news has caught onto it, calling it the "hottest new internet trend". Nice work there, considering it's been going on for one or two years.

It's totally fine that you like the song, but when used in a RickRoll it fails. Fails hard.

PurleRain, you are lucky sir. They're nothing but irritating, and if your friends are borderline retarded like mine then they think it's the "funniest thing since Blue Collar Comedy Tour!" (Direct quote, sadly enough).

I have actually never been rickrolled.

Though I have had that "scary face and screaming noise" thing happen to me a few times.
One time I also got this really weird set of spongebob pictures (really weird) accompanied with creepy music. It scarred me.

Good to know I'm not alone.

Funny, they seem to be doing it with the word 'Epic' as well. They've recently started putting that word on pretty much every product/show/movie that I see adverts for nowadays.

Epic's the trendy word of the season. We all use it in everyday conversation now without even realizing we're doing it. Or at least I do.

Being an Australian and having been rickrolled many a time, I think Australians probably are aware of it...although with a poorer speed internet than a lot of other Western countries maybe youtube is a bit out of the question for some of us...

In any case, the presenters on all of those morning shows are fairly vapid morons put there to vaguely amuse viewers between the infomercials that comprise most of the show so duping them wouldn't have been difficult. AT ALL.

Kudos to the 100 million all the same.

I'm an Aussie, and this morning on this horrid breakfast talk show "Sunrise", they had a phone-in survey about whether "Never Gonna Give You Up" was the best dance track ever made. My brother thought this was ironic, as 56% of callers agreed, not realising that the whole incident was a rickroll in itself.

man, i hate idiotic siblings.

It's sad. I've actually tried to cut back on my use of the word 'epic' to try and quell this disturbing uprising.

i wouldn't say he's idiotic, I would say he's uninformed.

But I agree on the fact that you hate Sunrise. So do I. Very much.
