What are your thoughts on backwards compatiblility?

My Answer:
I dont really care unless my old system breaks down.

It is useful. It allows me to sell my old system, and keep my library of older, liked games still playable. One of the reasons I have a Wii instead of a gamecube, although Wii games are still nice.

the only advantage to keeping my ps2 the cheat devices like gameshark and action replay because they don't work in ps3 ... as for most its just easier to have one system hooked up instead of 2

It's useful. It's great to be able to play old games, especially when you get a new computer and decide to see how your old games look. Just think how Crysis will look on future computers...
Of course, it's harder to do now. Fucking Vista.

BC is great but should only have to target the previous version and nothing older
What do you mean, "should only have"? Is there a law mandating BC I don't know about?

And why do you want BC to only target the previous platform, when the ones older than that can almost invariably be done entirely in software, bringing the added cost per unit to zero? (Which is why PS3 has full PS compatibility and no PS2 compatibility.)

Very important!
For two big reasons.
1: Save desk/table/TV clutter and it's more convienient than two consoles, applies massively if you move around a lot or don't have the luxury of an AVGN style gaming room.
2: It's expected nowadays, since the PS2 onwards it's more or less taken for granted, when people drop £200+ on a console now they expect it to have the funcionality of their old one and more. Not just different functionality, it also lessens the blow if the games on the current generation suck, which is often the case in the first 18 months.

100% backwards compatibility is what made the PS2 win the console wars in the last two generations (even over the 360 and PS3) in my mind. I don't give two shits about graphics, give me good new games and the ability to play all the old games I bought last generation and I'll be happy. Like Gekido. And Gex. And Resident Evil. And Dino Wars. And...

backwards compatable, of course, its a good feature, and its ridiculous to not have such a standard feature anymore.

Should be standard on all consoles made by the same company. Assuming they support the same format.
It's a great feature and very handy if you're looking to maximize library and minimize space.

I'll say this. Backwards compatibility is not next gen. It's a nice feature, but (to me) not a selling point.

I can't help wondering what you are going to call the next console generation. "Next next gen"?

Hahaha. I'm gonna call it...."adjacent gen".

BC is nice, but remember people. It's a privilege, which can be taken away at any time in the console's lifetime.

Unless you bought your console at launch. XD

I didn't buy a 360 to play original XBOX games. Backwards compatibility isn't necessary. However, I will say that it is sometimes a nice gesture, but I don't particularly care about it.
