Backwards compatibility is a great addition to a console. My Ps3 plays both Ps2 and Ps1 games, and it's just so wonderful.

I thoroughly enjoy backward-compatibility, and I was lucky enough to snap up one of the last remaining models of Playstation 3 that includes it. Emotion Engine, baby!

I never understood the need for backwards compatibility in consoles.

OK, so you got alot of old PS2 games you want to keep playing...
then you would also have bought a PS2.

Don't throw it away. Problem solved.

Meh, backwards compatibility is nice, but it should not be the focal point of the hardware. The DSi is the next step for the DS as a line of handhelds separate from the GameBoy line of old. People should not expect backwards compatibility on the DS for GBA games anymore than they should expect SNES games to work on an N64.

I miss the ability to play GBA games on my DS, but it's nice having a handheld that cut the cord from the old systems. SD support is nice too.

Er, I could be wrong about this but I think the DSlite has it, but the DSi dosen't.
DSi aparently will have an online store were you can buy the GBA games and stuff...New ways to make the costumers to squeeze out money.

Too right mate, too right.

Although this isn't exactly backwards compatability, it's an example of we game consumers being wringed for more cash that absolutely fucking outraged me; when they released Rock Band 2 and they said that if you wanted to send your songs over from the RB1, you could pay a 'small fee' to buy a transfer license. This is despite the fact that I have bought Rock Bands 1 AND 2, as well as all the instrument peripherals to go with it, AND I pay for my XBL subscription in order to even buy this online license in the first place. It's fucking ridiculous.

Not really a selling point, but something a console should have anyway.
I wouldn't buy a PS3 to play PS2 games, but I'd like it if my PS3 had it anyway.

That example is inaccurate for me though. Because my PS3 doesn't have backwards compatibility, because I already have a working PS2.

I'm gonna say F YES IT IS. Especially seeing as that's one of the points keeping me from getting a PS3... Curse Sony for stopping those models....

What if I don't feel like having a Ps1, Ps2, and a Ps3 all plugged into my TV at the same time? Backwards compatibility solves that dilemma. Hence, it's a selling point to me.

Backwards compatibility is a great thing because it lets you re-live early years of your life when you were playing classic ps1,2 and xbox games. Some old games were absolute classics like The Warriors and the early metal gear solid games that are not on the 360 or ps3. So the ability to play them still is great.

We get backwards compatibility for atleast 20 years. And when consoles become old, we get backwards compatibility for them too. In a few years, we'll get the ps2 fully functional and there's been good progress on all handhelds too.

I nearly bought a PS3 at the beginning for this but chose an X-box to play online with friends.

However I have kept my PS2, until the PS3 is backward compatible I will not consider investing.

I think it's obvious what's my answer.

I won't buy DSi, it's not backwards compatibile.

I also won't buy Vista, because it doesn't run many older games. And it requires too much PC power to dual-boot effectively.

The very day I heard they were stopping Backwards compatibility in PS3 was the day I bought a PS3.
No way was I missing out on that. Even though my PS2 still works it's so much more convenient and I can put it in my study with my other older systems.

It's a feature SONY shouldn't have removed. They could have removed WiFi. Most of my friends have it hardwired anyway for a guaranteed connection.

Yes, of course it is. I love it that my PS2 plays all the old Crash and Spyro games, very good considering I recently started retro gaming again. And FF: Tactics Advance makes my DS collection complete, despite being for the GBA. I still love playing Halo 2 on my Xbox 360, so why wouldn't backwards compatibility be a huge selling point? I'd consider buying a PS3 if I could still play all my old PS2 and PS1 games on it, but if I couldn't then I wouldn't consider it.
