I'm pretty sure I've made my point. Why?!? Why does Robert Rodriguez make terrible children movies. Not even decent ones, just flat out terrible. I can understand them churning out money, but really? He's already cemented a place as one of the best directors of his time, why tarnish his legacy with such odd projects?

Another thing I don't understand about all this is his use of the Spy Kids franchise. Rodriguez has used that franchise to help push technology in the film industry. Spy Kids 2 was one of the first movies to be shot in HD, which has become an industry staple. Spy Kids 3 was the first movie to be in 3-D in over twenty years, and helped set in motion this new 3-D craze (unfortunately). Also, the fourth edition used aromascope, which in addition to 3-D glasses, scents will be present while the movie is played in the theater.

I'm guessing that Rodriguez uses children movies for lab work. Thoughts?

spy kids 1 and 2 were good, the rest suck. but lets be honest, his kids films are made by someone who is used to Tarantino like violence...in fact, he's best friend with Tarantino.

all his other works are pretty good, Sin City, Predators, the mexican trilogy, grindhouse, machete. and so on. Dudes a icon of indie filmakeing.

Key point to consider here is that he makes these movies for HIS kids. Well at least the first two Spy Kids and Shark boy and Lava Girl. The ones that came after may have been the studio pushing him as part of a deal to get the more adult productions made.

Also, I love Planet Terror. First exposed to his work with Dusk til Dawn, but Planet Terror is my favorite to date.

Yes, he's made terrible kids movies. Then again, Spy Kids wasn't all that bad, the sequels sucked though.

But then again, he's given us El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn (probably one of my favorite vampire movies), Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, Planet Terror (another one of my favorite horror movies), Predators, and this absolutely beautiful sight of Danny Trejo jumping a motorcycle with a minigun on the handle bars backlit by a massive explosion with added film imperfections and high contrast and color temperature to make the movie that much more of a homage to the grindhouse B movies of yester-generation.

[small]What you see here is an early enlightenment made possible by sheer amounts of unbridled turn-your-brain-off awesomeness.[/small]

Robert Rodriguez seems to be good at only one type of movie. B-Movie homages. Both him and Quentin Tarantino have that genre locked down tight however, and the only seemingly good one to come out from someone besides them has been Black Dynamite.

To the average viewer things these kinds of movies are stupid. They're more or less a feature-length in-joke for the people who know what B-Movies are and are banking on that small group to appreciate the movie as a work of loving homage. The kind you turn your brain off, suspend your disbelief, leave your sense of observation at the door , grab a bowl of popcorn and watch Cheech Marin blow dudes' heads off with dual shotguns.

I just watched Machete earlier today, which inspired this thread. Robert Rodriguez makes such great movies that it's a head scratcher that he goes from his twisted, well done gore fests to awful kid movies. Half of his movies are for children, and the other half would have DSS knocking at your door if you ever let a child view them. I absolutely love Rodriguez's work and how he gets exactly what he wants from his actors. Also, his infatuation with both Danny Trejo and Jessica Alba is fantastic.
