TL;DR: Should I go for a 4 string or a 5 string bass guitar?

I'm going to get a Bass guitar. I have no experience whatsoever with guitars and have signed up for lessons two months ago but it'll take a while before I get some answers on that..

I do want to buy a Bass guitar already though, so I can get to know it a little before I get lessons

There are two versions of it, one has 4 strings, the other has 5 strings. The price is exactly the same so now I'm pondering, should I get the 4 stringed or the 5 stringed one?

Remember, I have no experience whatsoever

My friend has a 5 string jazz bass, and that is really nice, but if you are just starting out, go with 4.

Four, absolutely. Five is for those styles of music that nobody cares about anymore. Also four is easier to learn. You can always go to five later if you really must play that nu-metal or jazz fusion poo.

go with four but have a couple of lessons first don't waste money if your not going to stick with it I should know about that. Bought a bass and didn't play it for about a year. I'm playing it now though its awesome

5 String bass is a bit like fretless or acoustic, its a very specific type, which is useful for some sounds, but it is not the standard. I would recommend getting a standard 4 string for now. If you really get in to it later, you will probably end up having 3-4 that you use for specific purposes anyway, so getting the all rounder first is a good idea.

If I didn't live over 10,000 kms away from you I'd offer to give you lessons.

Well, you may as well get the 5 string. If it's the same price, you're just getting more for your money. I don't find the extra string to be much of a hindrance really, and it means you can play more stuff.

I voted 5, it just gives you more flexibility and you can always just ignore the strings you dont want to use. Also it may actually be better if you dont start playing until your first lesson, if you teach yourself the basics you may develope bad habbits, maybe, everyone is different. Learn to play slap.

4 strings to start with man. Thinner neck, less confusing and when you're starting out do you really need an extra string? Hell, most bassists don't even need an extra string. If you want something extra down the line upgrade to a five, no harm done.. That's what I did =D

I'm thinking of getting a 6 soon.

4 all the way. It's used in a lot wider range of musical styles as well so it's easier to figure out your groove. This is coming from someone who used to play 5-string in a band (Hey it was the late 90's NuMetal was IN!)
