Poll: Batman is the hero...

I'm just curious as to how many people remember this quote properly. I see it misqouted all the time and it kind of pisses me off, because the way most people are doing it changes the meaning of the movie completely.

its the one standout line from The Dark Knight thats remained with me since i saw it in cinema when it came out.

the way i remember it, it's Gotham needs a hero, but then something about how they don't deserve a hero until they don't need one.

Although ... why IS it that way round? Surely Gotham is a shithole and doesn't deserve Batman at all? But therefore also needs him? I didn't see anyone else managing to take down Scarecrow/Joker etc.

The movie spent a long time drawing a dichotomy between Batman and Dent. Batman was the dark knight whereas Dent was the white one. Batman could stop crime as it happened, but only Dent could put it away for good.

What I posted to a friend on FB:

Batman is the hero Gotham deserves, not the one it needs. Dent was the one it needs. It's a commentary on Gotham being so corrupt, that it ended up fucking up the one opportunity it had to clean itself up legitimately with Dent. Now it has to deal with Batman and his dark brand of justice.
