Ok, so I have a quick question here. I was taking care of a neighbors dog for two weeks while they were gone. When they got back and payed me, I found that they I had given me much more then my work had warranted (about 500 dollars). Am I ethically bound to give them some money back, or should I just assume that they were being generous?

Ask. If they say its ok, good job. If they seem to pause for a moment, then you shoud give some back.

Maybe tell them it was too much if you think so. If they insist you keep it, then go ahead.

hmmm... take free money or be kindhearted and return it... If they don't need it but you don't want it just give it to those in need, no brainer.

If they look like they need it do the right thing and give it back, if they can throw money around like nothing, then you worked hard for it, you earned it.

Talk to them about it, say you think they gave you a bit too much money, maybe they'll reconsider, maybe they'll say you earned it and that you deserve it. Even if you only end up with 200-300 dollars in the end because they realize it was an oversight, it's the honesty that counts.

If there is a possibility of you working for them again I say give the extra money back. If not, take it.

i you dont think they'll be needing the money keep it. or do some extra work for what they already paid you, like walk the dog once or twice.

unless they intended to give you $50 and didn't notice they gave you hundreds instead of tens, they were being generous, keep it, some consider it impolite and or stupid to give the money back.

I'd make sure they meant to do it. They might have been being generous, it might have been an honest mistake. If it was an honest mistake, offer to give it back and there's a good chance you'll get something for your honesty.

And they'll think of you again next time they need something done.

Tell them that they gave you too much, if it was just like $10 $20 more than i wouldnt worry but it sounds like thay gave you a large sum. Taking an extra bit is alright but when it gets to be a big extra bit then its just selfish.

Unless they made some sort of mention of a tip for your work, I'd ask. They might say "oops" and take some cash or they might say "keep it." Either way, you know you did the right thing... the stupid thing but the right thing.

You only have keep it or give it back as an option other than other?

Well you cant just give it back because it may seem like you are being inconsiderate so say that the amount is quite alot and ask them if they meant to give you that amount... if not give them (insert amount) back, if so then be very grateful.

I wanna say "hell no! They can afford to both go on Holiday for Two weeks AND pay you 500 bucks, you should keep it, enjoy and finally get that you've wanted for a while".

But the real part of me says "hooolllly shit, that is quite alot of money for not alot of work, but then again, people get paid more then that professionally doing what you did, so talk to them and see if that's really ok. But honestly, they wouldn't give you that ammount of money if they couldn't afford it and didn't think you deserved it".
