It isn't. My step dad is a police officer, and I asked him about the subject once. Turns out he isn't allowed to use any terms that make the person seem different. He says there is a complicated system for calling people 'Special needs', which is wrong apparently. As 'special' may have negative connotations.
See, this is where things get difficult and needlessly ridiculous.
Exactly my point.

I try to mostly keep to the spirit of political corectness rather than the letter of it. I make exception to this some times, but that's normally in humor or as a reaction against someone being insultingly patriotic (I consider high levels of patriotism to be taking credit for someone else's achievements while exluding others, so I don't put up with it).
I address everyone as "mate", as it's a fairly generic, all inclusive term. I don't talk to anyone any different because of their gender, age etc. Anyone who has a problem with get's addressed as "arse-hole" or "degenerate".

Only when I have to turn it on for work or around really naggy "that's insensative" types oddly enough they're always the only ones who get offended. However I refuse to use African American its bloody stupid and long black is fine and most black people in britain are neither African or American >_>

I'm only politically correct around people who are politically correct, because they're the only ones who are ever offended.
This.
Most people aren't offended, and, unless I'm used to using a term that is "PC", I'll only be careful when they think it's important.

Around my friends I find it better to be completely politically incorrect. Around others though.... don't want to give a bad impression. Although, my dad has brought me up to see most political correctness as bullshit.

I think most people, and indeed some people here have a view on PC that is entirely too black and white. It can be a useful tool I think, but not something I use in my everyday life.

I see no point in offending people unless I mean it, so in that respect being PC can be a tool to avoid that. If I try to make a point or convey a message that I want people to listen to it serves my purpose that they won't be offended by something tangential and completely fail to listen to what I'm saying. So in that way I can use it to suit my purposes. It has the added benefit that if I want to offend someone for real I still have that tool as well. I think PC allows me to operate in a discourse on more levels than if I just throw caution to the wind and speak freely.

It's the same with swearing. Personally I don't mind swearing but if it's something I want people to listen to I avoid it as not to get people stuck on a casual 'fuck'. And again, it leaves me free to curse when I really need it.

However in my everyday I'm not particularly PC as it can needlessly complicate things.

I think a lot of people see it as some kind of encroachment on their personal freedom. Bullshit I say! We are of course free to speak as we like, but there really is no point in needlessly antagonizing people.

Or in other words; a lot of people are whinging twats that can't be arsed to think before you talk.

Not quite the same feeling from those two statements, even if they mean the same. Which one is more likely to be taken serious?

Note to mods: I am trying to make a point, not to needlessly insult other users. I genuinely feel that the argument is sound. But if I am out of line I'll take my punishment.

What's up with 'Political Correctness'? I don't understand how 'little people' is better than midget. I guess I'm just a callous person with no feelings toward others. Or maybe I just think it's ridiculous. Anyway, when(if you ever are) are you politically correct?
It's just about being respectful of other people. Though it has gone a bit far in terms of seriousness. It should actually hamper freedom of speech which it often does. More importantly, it actually drives a wedge between different groups and specific animosity towards those who complain.

As PnT would say "Political Correctness is Bullshit!".

We shouldn't demand that people act a certain way around certain people. We all are people and it shouldn't be any more specific than that.

Either a comment isn't ok for EVERYONE or it is ok for EVERYONE. If X can't say Y, then nobody can...but that's not how it works.

It's hypocritical and entirely destructive. There is nothing good about PC.

I generally try to be PC around people I don't know, and especially figures of authority. With friends, I tend to forget about it.
