Yeah, but as much as I like The Division Bell and A Delicate Sound of Thunder, I'll have to say that Floyd were clearly past their peak by 1980, what with The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon coming out prior to that time.
Since Maiden is my favourite band, I will wave that flag along with the hordes that are doing so.
The fact that so many people voted 'other' shows the inherent problem with the OP: it should be stated "which of these bands do you think were best since 1980?" This would account for the bias previously admitted, and evident.
Maiden and Priest lead the British metal train which also transports Motorhead Black Sabbath (past their peak as well, but alive and kicking) and Pearl Jam. The Prodigy and Queen present two alternatives for me which I'd take without second thought.
Dude, Dublin is not in Northern Ireland. Any argument for them being British would come from two of the band being from England.
But they are not. They are Irish. Indisputably Irish.
If we're going to do this, it has to be balanced between popular success and critical acclaim. And as OP can probably guess from the amount of hate, the Poll is poor.
Personally I'm into folk and blues, so my opinions aren't right for this, but I would probably have to include Dizzee Rascal, Blur (God, nearly put Blue), the Libertines, the Prodigy, the Smiths, Supergrass, Elbow, the Stone Roses, the Streets.
In fact, no, no I wouldn't. Because there isn't a best artist of any sort, ever. It's a stupid pointless thing to do. I'm so angry I'm not even going to delete my pointless comments above. Also, people need to be corrected about U2. And know how BAD I think their new single is.
Best, that's incredibly subjective. Weren't The Clash around in the late 70s though? While I like bands like Muse, and Radiohead, throwing words like "best" around doesn't somehow seem right.
Hate Oasis and Coldplay though. Sorry.
Also, I think Depeche Mode should be on the list, but that's personal preference.
I agree with many posters who voted for Queen. And with the many, many, many bands that could possibly go on this list, this probably shouldn't have been a poll. It probably should have just peen a post. Ah, well, not that big of a deal.
Oh, and the poster who said The Beatles, um, no. Greatest British band of all time? Very possible. 80's onward? No. Your dates are a bit off.
i like fratellies there not the best but i like em queen were good was phil collins in a band cause he is awesome (not sure if he is british, sorry britans but im a convict) bee gees maybe
I should really have voted for Muse, as they're my favourite band, however for some reason I couldn't because of the time scale given, so I went for Oasis.
