Who in your opinion is the best british band since 1980?

I say 1980 that was when I belive all the good bands started to come out of the wood (like U2, The Clash, Madness etc)

I personally say Oasis, mainly because of the brilliant songs, the intersting singing voice of Liam Gallagher and the superb lyrics by Noel Gallagher

Wit Coldplay a ver close 2nd.

Note The poll maybe Bias due to thefact I dislike metal, also sorry for the lack of other bands, due to the very small options

None, I dislike all of those bands. I chose other and shall go with 'The Sisters Of Mercy' or 'Depeche Mode' or 'Joy Division'. Oh wait, I am just listing all the alternative bands of the 80's...

Well known =/= good.

I always thought of the Clash as a 70's band. other than that, I'm dissapointed in your poll choices, not only are you missing Belle and Sebastian, you're also lacking Blur.

I'm serious about this, BTW.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and why did you put U2 in this poll? they're Irish (not a part of the UK) and how many people actually like U2? they never struck me as hugely popular.

Iron Maiden or Napalm Death.

Queen were cool, too.

Too bad I can't nominate King Crimson.

Muse are alright, too.

Honestly, this seems like a rather biased poll.

And by biased, I mean 'not very good'.

What about the wonderful contributions the UK has made to pop, jazz, classical, folk, industrial and trip-hop? It's not just your dislike of metal that cripples this poll, boyo.

Apologies in advance for the double-post.

Joy Division (well, they're classed as an 80's band).

Certainly not oasis under any circumstances, they rip off the Beatles there entire act is annoying beyond all reason. They whine in their songs and they have brought disrepute to the town where I live, I also hate the way they pronounce sunshine shunsheeeeine. No one talks like that!

As to the greatest British band Eighties to present day, it does rather depend on your definition. Most success? Best musically? Biggest following?

I would go for Skyclad the originators of Folk Metal there lyrical genius is unsurpassed. Where is the punk? Where is the Trip Hop? The Ska? The Reggae? And infact any of the underground indie bands from the Nineties such as Neds Atomic Dustbin, The Wonderstuff and PWEI?

You dont like metal you say, thats fair but you also appear to also dislike anything that isnt on the best indie album in the world volume 3 which was released in the year 2000!

Not to pick nits, but U2 has been one of the biggest bands in the world for decades, particularly following the 1983 release of War. They've won more Grammy awards than any other band in history and have sold something like 100 bazillion albums. In terms of music, U2 pretty much embodies popularity.

The band has numerous enthusiastic detractors too, particularly among the young, musically-relevant hipster population who disdain anything with a following of more than 17 of the coolest people on the planet. But I find that very much like the criticism of people who deride World of Warcraft as a shitty game: Their problem isn't with the game so much as with the fact that something they're generally indifferent toward is so enormously popular.

But they are Irish, as you say, so yeah. Wrong list.

LOL, This thread has managed to start with the omission of both The Stone Roses and The Smiths. They are two of the most influential groups of the 80's that have influenced so many of there modern successers....Muse, Oasis Artic Monkeys etc.

All this and we havn't even got New Order into the mix. Now ofcourse we can't include every band from the last 29 years but I would have at least thought there would have been bands that released either an iconic album or shaped a generation.

With all this said why is there no british dance groups catered for on the list either. Not that the Prodigy, Orbital and the Chemical brothers have released anything thats influenced the world.

Shenanigans I cry!

Ian Curtis was Dead long before the 80's dude, but New Order were around releasing 'Technique' a damn fine album.

That's a tough question, I wouldn't say it was any of the bands on the pole though. For me it's between Portishead, mclusky and The Prodigy. There'll be a load of others that I've forgotten right now though.
