What do people think is the best fighter game/serie? Give some reason why you like it, is the gameplay good, do you like the characters or what makes the game you chose the best there is.

In my opinion the best is Tekken series. Clear controls (button for each limb), always looked nice, good tempo, only unnecessary 10 move comboes to remember.

A bit jokingly the first runner up is Metal and Lace series. It was a basic 2D fighter that played quite nicely, but the little extra after combat made you really want to win.

Yer missin Street fighter and smash bros, and for some reason you have the random button masher that is soul calibur on the list.

Power stone is also fun in its own way.

Added Street fighter and super smash bros. No more can be added, no space. And this is just a poll selection. If you have a favourite outside this list, tell us about it.

Dude, what about Mortal Kombat?!? That and Bloody Roar for the PS1 are my favorite fighters, went with Soul Caliber, though.

I voted for Super Smash Bros, naturally. I think the reason I like it so much is because it feels less like a "fighting game" than most fighting games.

You missed out Mortal Kombat and Dead or Alive. My vote would go to one of them. Used to be Soul Calibur, but it seems the series just isn't what it used to be.

The best fighting game franchise? To me it's King of Fighters, after all my favourite fighting game is a KOF title (XI). Just something about the fast combo and close quarters combat that I like.

VF4Evolution was my world for three years and I didn't even have a living opponent to face, just me, a controller (now a stick), the AI, and the best training mode(s) ever conceived in fighting games that teaches you everything from where the block button is to triple throw escape evades and fuzzy guarding.

That game still is the only one out there where you can lose yourself for a couple of months and come out being actually competent enough to stand a bit of a chance in the competitive arena without having to consult any other resources.

Plus VF has the most options open at any time to both the defending and attacking player and it is also the most balanced fighter out there (all characters represented in final 32 of SBO).

Flatearth:
I always wondered about Tekken's controls (LP, RP, LK, RK or 1 2 3 4). It sounds logical in theory, but when you start playing you have no idea what the effect is of any of the buttons. Any button produces different results with different characters, sure they all use the appropriate limb, but the actual effects are comepletely character dependant.

Pressing RK or LK doesn't tell you anything about the in game effect of the move you're initiating, only the leg they're using (unless you're Steve, whee! there come the exceptions already). So what's the use for that control scheme from a gameplay perspective there?

Still an enjoyable game, even if I can't get the timing of the moves down, I'm abhorrently crap at rythm games you see. It's just that the controls of the game are praised so often, yet in effect mean totally nothing, you might as well play any other four button (no guard) game, like GG or KoF or something (Rumble Fish had four buttons right?).

Def Jam:Fight for New York, its really fun and has a decent story.
Definately one of my favorites, however the crown of "the best" would have to go to Virtua Fighter 5. It is technically the most accurate and balanced fighting game in history. There is only so far you can get with button mashing, and like with a real martial art it takes time to perfect and you will get your ass handed to you to begin with.
I find Tekken and Soul Calibur are too combo-happy at the expense of realism and balance.

I find 2D fighters to be a different kettle of fish to their 3D counterparts, so my favorite out of them would have to be Street Fighter Alpha 2. Plenty of characters, plenty of options and it is just plain fun.

I'll be completely alone on this one, but Darkstalkers. To this day, I still play the series.

I really like Street Fighter (when the AI isn't spectactularly cheap) and I sort of like Soul Calibur, but my all-time favorite is Tekken. I absolutely love the flow of the game, I grew up with it, and I am a Yoshimitsu MASTER.

Mortal Kombat: Deception is, was, and always will be my favorite fighting game. They took all the fighters, and turned the badass up to 11.

It's with a K, kid! K! Kombat.

As for me, my favorites are Tekken and Soul Calibur. Tekken represents several different fighting styles and character types, has an atleast interesting story line, and the control scheme is technical enough to give good players an edge of button mashers and cheesers while still not being overly complicated or boring. As well, the graphics are always amazing to me. Preferred characters: Steve Fox, Hwarang, Kazuya Mishima, and Bruce.

As for Soul Calibur, I like it for mostly the same reasons that I like Tekken, being that its essentially Tekken with weapons. Also it has the baddest mofo this side of Solid Snake, in Mitsurugi as a character. Sweet. But the story in it is next to terrible if not ignorable. But I enjoy the super moves and what not. My preffered characters are Mitsurigi and Yunseong (what can I say, I have a thing for red-haired Koreans).

As for 2D, it'd definetly be Marvel vs. Capcom and the sequel. Its really fast paced, over the top, and I get to use some of my favorite Marvel characters to beat the piss out of Zangief. My preferred characters are Gambit, Ken, Iceman, Jin, and Magneto.

I was also a huge fan of the Bushido Blade, one of the most realistic fighting games of all time on the original Playstation, one of its more early titles. It was a great game. No health bars, just body damage physics and kills shots. Cool stuff.

And I dunno if anyone remembers, but I loved the games Bloody Roar, Evil Zone, and Battle Arena Toshinden. All of them were Playstation and PS2 fighting games. I loved those alot. I wish there were some modern versions of them around. Or at the very least, let them be downloadable on X-Box Live or Playstation Network.

Soul Calibur & Tekken 3 are 2 of the highest reviewed games of all time: http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp?rankings=y, so maybe they're the best?

Other than that, I vote for Smash Bros ;)

My memory could be faulty, but I seem to recall that there were some very cheap (as in easy to pull off) instant-kill tricks that sorta broke it. Still a cool game.

Mortal Kombats good, its always fun ripping off someones leg and beating them to death with the drippy end. I also liked Killer Instinct on the Snes, but in the end I think I gotta go with Smash Bros. Its just so much fun!
