A quick cinematic than then throws you straight into it can be pretty memorable. I think ones where you just dive straight into the action, or straight into a 'tutorial' or whatever generally work the best. They leave a more lasting impression on you.

For example, I think the flashforward in Prototype worked really well as an opening, although it probably could have been a little better executed. It created a sense of mystery that made the unravelling plot more interesting. You know what's going to happen, but how did you get there?

Yeah, I like developers to just startle me by putting me straight in the action. Not knowing what the fuck is going on can actually be a good thing if it's right at the beginning. It creates a good sense of atmosphere.

I like it when games gradually introduce you to conflict rather than just outright throwing you into battle or taking control away from you to show some fancy intro cinematic.

Half-Life does this well in terms of shooters, and Baldur's Gate in terms of rpg. Games where you're allowed to take your own time learning the basic mechanics while also taking in the ambiance and learning the backstory should you so choose. A 'calm before the storm' as it were! It also gives the player a sense of perspective for when conflict does indevitably break out. Half-Life's disaster wouldn't have been nearly as dramatic if we hadn't seen a glimpse of 'before' the chaos to add that extra layer of pure shit-hit-the-fan ambiance. Similarly the initial wilderness of Baldur's Gate feels all the more threatening when only moments before you were in a nice cozy walled fortress and your most dire threats were a few incompetent twits. Now when suddenly you're left directionless in the middle of a hostile forest, it feels all the more dramatic.

There are other examples as well, but those are my favorites for their genre.

In Media Rez (spelling?) where they toss you to the wolves with a hands on tutorial are my favorite. Mafia II is one of my favs. I also like a good intro with action and a good score ala Borderlands.

I like Mass Effect's intro system, where they have long, detailed cinematic intros with playable segments.

my personal favorite kind is the type where the protagonist wakes up just after all hell has broken loose, and you relive the events leading up to it
