Wow, a bunch of 2000's series...

Eff you...

Were are the series that started back in the 80's and 90's?

I mean a "best of all time" related video game list without even a mention of Mario or Zelda and yet Halo is here?

Listen, no questions asked most of those series are fantastic (except Halo) but were are all the big names in the industry?

No "The Sims" (most successful PC series of all time)?

No "Super Mario" (most economically successful game series of all time)?

This basically looks like a list made up of "What's hot at the moment"...
I agree with you (except for the Halo part, I like it.)

What about: Prince of Persia, Metroid Prime, Shining Force, and this list could go on and on.

The problem with threads like this is that there are too many choices over too many genres. Narrow the scope a bit... There is no way any one series can be the best ever. Best ever to who? What if the person hates FPS and people say Half-Life. Also, ever implies that nothing will come out later to surpass it. Kinda hard to imagine in the gaming world.

Jesus, I didn't realize there were so many Valve fanboys on this forum. Though I guess I should know by now... I'll mention one more time how 'meh' I feel the Half-Life series is in the grand scheme of things. I know that makes those of you with Valve's pubes up your nostrils very angry, but I really don't care. You know that overwhelming sense of mediocrity PC gamers get when the Halo series is mentioned? That's me and Half-Life.

As for my choice, it's easily Warcraft. Nothing else really even compares. Warcraft 3 is still in my opinion the best RTS on the market, and WoW is obviously a gaming monstrosity the likes of which the industry has never seen before.

I shouldn't have to explain why ... but I will (otherwise I basically padded out "this"), the story is deep and more complex than any other game (each person has there own story, which is more than just a short blurb, from what I can remember), it gives you the option of stealth (to get the best rewards) or run at the enemy Rambo style (which gives you very little, except more enjoyment), it broke the forth wall atleast once (with psychomantis)and I bet it made a few people cry.

MGS, modern warfare, playing with stealth, wide range of environments to play in, easy to use controls, each sequel expands on the way you can manipulate/control your character (eg: MGS2 introduced leaning and stepping out from behind cover and shooting).
And in 3 you could eat crocodiles, and in 4 you could dress yourself as Otacon!
Couldn't you lean in the first game?

You could also dress up as a corpse to scare people, 4 girls, Raiden(X2), Campbell and Drebin.

I forgot about metal gear solid lol. But why? What makes it the best to you? :)
The story is epic, the characters are epic, the gameplay is fun, and I just love it.
Half-Life.
The story in MGS is not epic; it is and always has been badly written.
Which story? Raiden's? Snake's? The boss's? Big boss's? Or the main story?

Are you saying half-life story is better? (just asking) I haven't completed any half-life game but they all seem to be "only you can save the world"

The Legend of Zelda.

It's the reason I started playing games, the reason I still own a Wii, and the reason why I continue to have faith in games as a creative medium.

I think you'll find quite a few of those are from the 90's

Hl 1 was what, 97' 98'
GTA 1 was 96' i think
Warcraft Orcs and Humans was 95'
C&C started in the mid 90's too
Elder Scrolls also started mid 90's and Oblivion and GTA IV are now in the bargain bin, they aren't exactly hot atm
Final fantasy also started in the 90's

I agree with those games, but nobody who has selected Other have mentioned them from what i've noticed. And tbf thats why i put in Other, the 8 limit on poll means many games will naturally get left out

Silent hill 1 2 and 3
(4 is that cousin that smells like year old cheese that no one likes and homecoming is the other cousin who tries to be cool by showing his rare Pokemon cards every thanksgiving.)

No Zelda?! What madness is this?
Zelda is one of the most critically wel-received franchise ever, with Ocarina of Time still being the highest-rated game amongst critics ever. Zelda truly is a gaming dynasty. Also, with strong classic series like mario, metroid, and even mega-man absent, this list to me feels like a rather biased affair.

Also, best in what way? The quality of "best" is rather subjective, after all.
Sorry i meant to make it clear to what in your opinion is best, but why in your opinion is it best. Why for example is Zelda your fav series? ignore what critics say, its your fav game not theirs.

It's a little early to be deciding 'greatest ever' just yet. This console generation finally got in full swing with the PlayStation 3's fortunes turning around.
Mass Effect has yet to be a proper series with its sequel coming out next month and Dragon Age may get a sequel and as far as action games go, if Bayonetta looks to be as good as the demo and advance reviews suggest, that genre could have a new queen as soon as it gets a sequel.
I'll just pick one that has yet to let me down too badly, then, until I can say for sure.
FallOut or maybe The Legend of Zelda.

Half-Life for me, I can see why people would pick MGS, even if I never liked those games.

I like Half-Life because of the atmosphere, everything just feels so... real?
That's not the right word but it's like everything that happens in Half-Life can happen in this world. I'm not saying it's realistic (it certainly isn't), but something like that.
The characters are believable, and I keep wondering what they experienced before Gordon returned (HL2, that is)

to that we can add a solid game play piece, there's a certain "flow" to it.
I think it has to do with the fact that jumping increase your speed (along with other things, ofc), in stead of decreasing it (like in most games).
There's just something extremely satisfying about jumping over a table and pumping a combine full with lead, and then turning around to do the same thing to his friend.
It's hard to explain.

I don't agree with people who say that HL2 is generic, it looks like the standard FPS on the outside. But when you take a deeper look it's something beautiful.
HL2 is what convinced me that video games can be art.

Please don't flame me for sounding like a fanboy, I like other games too.
Agree x 10000, but i am a fanboy :D

The Metal Gear series, by far. The best combination of innovative and original gameplay with compelling characters and writing.

My vote's with grand theft auto. As a series it works very well. I don't know why half life's got so many votes (And this is coming from a guy who'd kiss Gordon Freeman if he were real).

Im gonna go ahead and say Mass Effect.

Sure the game had its flaws and crappy framerate at points but there has never been another game (bar Oblivion) that has truly made me believe in the whole setting. The game is just all sorts of awesome.
I'll agree with you there. I have never been more hyped for a sequel than Mass Effect 2.

May we pray to Bioware, pray that they do not fuck up.

Jak & Daxter! For awesome platforming, shooting, and comedy. Close up comes Metroid. For being the best 2D platformer there is. Honorary mention goes to Final Fantasy, for the epic stories, and fun combat.

Oh yeah, go ahead and listen to everything Yahtzee tells you. In the mean time I'm going to go have my own opinions, thank you very much.
So just because Yahtzee says that doesn't mean he can't think that?

Final fantasy, for simply putting out a bajillion decent games. I mean, every series has its screw ups now and again, but the actual FF games(not dirge of cerberus or dissidia, though that was good too) are almost always enjoyable for me.
