I never played past Emerald, so my bias is strong. That said, I'm having a hard time picking between Gens 1 and 2. Given that Gen 2 had that bombshell of a twist in taking you back through Kanto, I'm gonna vote Gen 2.

I have to say generation 2, followed shortly by 5. 6 isn't a slouch, but so far it's kind of like that X/Y was just...there. like the amount of New Pokemon would've been mitigated slightly due to the addition of a new type, new 3d models and mega evolutions, but it didn't really give the new pokemon that much of a spotlight when you also see old favorites at the same time.

Never even completed BW2 just because of the difficulty revamp from BW, stuff like Pokestar isn't really that expansive as something like contests, probably slightly more meaningful than the video thing X/Y has. probably would be unfair if i counted remakes into the score otherwise 4 would be higher than 2 and 6 would be higher than 3.

The graphical jump from 1 to 2 is mostly because of how organized the architecture of the programming was whilst fixing small issues like having to save whenever moving pokemon (to changing boxes) whilst buffing bug/dragon slightly and hold items. whilst generation 3 was the first media upgrade; they are mostly limited to soundfonts and it did take a slight dip in animation quality but you do have colors and effects that can be shown such as a sprite glow.

D/P in retrospect was slightly a dark age, not much fanfavourites there except for Lucario and Staraptor, Cynthia is the Rosalina of the series just from how outbreaking she is. it felt more coherent having 1 evil team instead of 2 after they experimented with it in generation 3. also new evolutions of old pokemon was mostly limited to the aftergame except for a few like Roserade and Mismagius.

Im expecting that Pokemon Z/XY2 returns to Kalos, maybe opens up Eastern Kalos along with more Pokemon, then entering western Kalos would be slightly reminiscent to GSC. would probably have to give some emphasis on some of the Kalos Pokemon whilst adding some new evolutions to older Pokemon. because really, it's kind of obvious that Sylveon was played up purely to promote the Fairy type. even Umbreon seemed much more tamer in comparison since it was paired with Espeon whilst showing off the Day/Night feature.

Guess currently, X/Y felt fresh and revitilizing (because of the older pokemon, different from BW's emphasis on only new ones before endgame) but after moving to ORAS, it looked slightly slow in comparison despite having more recent material. ORAS added things which makes it less of a Black Sheep and more appreciative of some features like secret bases which synergizes with stuff like wifi and QR codes. i just don't know, Pokemon tends to be a mixed bag before the remakes, it kind of ages badly in comparison to most of the Zelda games and all of the Mario titles where at least playing older games can be entertaining.

See, while Gen 2 and the original Silver was my favourite, I didn't really rabidly love the game until SoulSilver. So probably going to have to give it to whatever Gen thats part off. Um, I think it was Gen 4 wasn't it; when dual types were introduced?

Gen Two, it took the best things from Gen One (including the entire Kanto region) and built upon them. Crystal was the first version to have a female character option (and moving sprites), the rival outranked Blue for jerkiness, expanded on the story of Team Rocket, introduced the day and night system and the Pokemon that can only be found at certain times of the day, also Umbreon and Espeon. Also the Pokemon IMO introduced in this generation were pretty awesome.

I'd have to give second place to X and Y because I just never imagined GameFreak would ever make the leap from sprites into full 3D and it did feel like a fresh start for the series, enough to keep long term fans interested and enough to get new players into the series.

Despite that, I actually enjoyed aspects of most of the games for different reasons. Ruby and Sapphire had a lot of personality in the environment and it was more story driven than previous games. The only gen I really felt meh about was Diamond and Pearl.

Pokemon Vietnamese Crystal is clearly the best Pokemon game ever created.
Which was actually a bootlegged version of Telefang. [http://telefang.wikia.com/wiki/Telefang_1]

I will always have a soft spot for the Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon, to the point where my teams in Pokemon x and Pokemon Y are pretty much exclusively made up of Pokemon from those two generations.

Gen 3 because it has so many of my favorites from the series such as favorite starter (Mudkip family), favorite legendaries (Groudon, Latios, Rayquaza, and the golems), and many of my all time favorite pokemon such as Marshstomp, Gardevoir, Metagross, Aggron, and Zangoose. Gen 3 also completely changed the game with the addition of abilities which helped to change strategies and led to some interesting pokemon such as Slaking who had stats to rival a legendary but could only attack every other turn.

It's interesting to see that my opinion is the popular opinion.

Gold and Silver all the way.

I'd even accept Heart Gold and Soul Silver as an appropriate answer, because it took the best game and incorporated the best mechanics up to that point.

Funny enough... I think it was X/Y that finally killed the series for me.

I had hoped that there would be good post elite four content, (something I've yet to see a pokemon do besides gen 2) but when it didn't, I started to realize... the goal is "catching them all" has become to difficult that it's ridiculous.

I still remember trying to trade my legendaries with some legendaries I got from some event, and couldn't... because they were event pokemon.

It's damn near impossible short of cheating to collect them all now and days.

Too many pokemon, too tired a formula, and too short of gen II

Everything else that you commented on, but I snipped out, I agree with in terms of why gen II was the best.

I've played through Generations 1, 2, 5, and 6.

Of those, I think my favorite is Gen 2, because it expanded a lot on Gen 1's selection, and there was some really cool Pokemon there. It was basically Gen 1, but with more stuff, and it was back when the Pokemon games were actually purely about your Pokemon journey. The later games get too wrapped up in trying to make them big and epic that it distracts from your true goal. Forcing you to stop your journey and try to save the world from these huge, catastrophic events involving villain teams and legendary Pokemons, when that's not what I feel Pokemon should be about. All I wanna do it beat the gyms, elite four and become the Pokemon champion. X/Y, as much as I still like it just fine, is the worst when it comes to this. It's irritating when I finish a gym and am about to head to the next town, and then one of my annoying friends run up to me and say "Hey! Stop what you're doing and lets check out THIS thing!" or "Hey! So-and-so is about to Blah-blah-blah! We have to stop him!" How about no, and fuck off! I don't care! You know what I do care about? Becoming the Pokemon champ and being the very best like no one ever was!

Of the later games, though, I feel Black/White has the best story. I liked a few of the characters, I did kinda get invested in what was happening, and I got behind Team Plasma's motives, at least more so than whatever the hell Team Flare was trying to do (What were they trying to do, anyway?)

It's always a toss between Gen 1 and 2 for me, but I have to go with Gen 1 since that's the one I grew up with and continue to replay years later whenever I'm feeling in a Pokemon mood. Choosing my starter in Red/Blue is still a giant pain in the ass that doesn't help my indecisiveness. I want them all!
