i've only played Zero, 1, 2 and 3 on GC so out of those i went with 1. it was REALLY creepy and had some great puzzles
I agree the puzzles and creepyness of resident evil 1 were great but you cant beat walking through a cafe then all you hear is " STARS!!! " then " ARGHHHHHHHHH!! " ^.^
that was great the first few times but i found him annoying after a while, especially when i died and had to do a bit again and couldn't skip cut scenes. however, having him chase after you while you're running to a door hoping you get there before he gets to you was edge-of-the-seat stuff. loved the choice bits

RE4 since it has great gameplay, good setting/environment, and a good upgrading system. It is a really fun and addicting game.

Resident Evil 2. It had the best atmosphere, music and overall the best balance of action and suspense out of the first three games (which were the best three, in my opinion). I didn't like the shift to being more actiony in RE4. Haven't played RE5 at all, but I've heard it was similar to 4, but not as good.

Personally, I liked a lot of the things people complain about in the earlier games (the cheesy dialogue, the puzzles, the awkward camera angles and the scarcity of ammo). They made Resident Evil...Resident Evil.

I think it's a good part nostalgia (as it's the first one I played), but I really liked the story. It was cool seeing the effects of the outbreak on the city after it happened. It did a great job of making one feel isolated.

Resident Evil 2: at the time it really was amazing, with multiple storylines, an appropriate creep factor, the first 'mercenaries' type minigame. So many other games built off that jumping point.

I realize this might be hard to do but if you can imagine what it was like to play RE2 for the first time, in a world where that was pushing technology, you can see how important the game is. Nothing against anyone's preference, of course but RE4 just doesn't exist without Resident Evil 2.

RE4 was the right game at the right time. After 4 original games + knock offs (Outbreak) and remakes, the formula was tired, the game stale. They turned the creepy haunted house feel into a crazy run and gun shooter (think the difference between Alien and Aliens) and after all that, did everything right.

Because make no mistake, RE4 is a monster of a game and from nearly every standpoint a better one than RE2 /except/ that because the gameplay became an entirely different beast, it's a bit unfair to compare the two. They're apples and juggernauts.

I voted for RE2, because I think that it needs to be remembered as a really fantastic piece of work, a landmark for it's day and I really do love the game. But I can't argue with RE4 as a selection either because it's equally as memorable and brilliant. It's just not the same game.

In the new style Action-Survival Horror hybrid, I'd have to say Resident Evil 4 was better. Gameplay was well paced, maps were huge and sprawling, and the puzzles harkened to an earlier era. From the old style collection though, I'd have to pick Resident Evil 3. It handled the horror element well without being as over the top as some of the other games (cross dressing Alfred anyone?) and Nemesis hunting you down really added to the tension.

Hmm, I wonder how many of these people voting for 4 have actually played the other titles (or at least played them first)?

My favorite out of the series by far was Resident Evil 5. I was too young when I played some of the previous ones to remember much about them. Anyway, RE5 takes the cake for me, Chris beating the shit out of a boulder, anyone? I'd have to say the entire final boss battle was quite awesome, minus the overload of cheesy one-liners before Wesker eats some rockets.
