He went to Russia and lost because of a winter, like Hitler, he conquered Europe and humiliated supposed powerful nations like Hitler (well for Napoleon it was Austria and for Hitler is was ironically France), basically the WWII European theatre was very comparable to Napoleon, the biggest difference though was the Napoleon wasn't really a homicidal maniac just a successful dictator.BlueberryMUNCH said:

Oh he conquered Gaul, not that amazing it's as amazing as Mussolini conquering Ethiopia, his enemies are technologically inferior, he was richer more powerful more professional and outright superior in terms of military. The only thing he did was turn Rome into a dictatorship. I have no idea why people think he is so great, sure he conquered Gaul but there are many other conquests far more fascinating and amazing. Saying that Napeleon is the 19th century Hitler is a bit of an overkill. All he tried to do was defeat the Prussian and United Kingdom. Yeah He did go all the way to Russia, but that was to defeat England (crazy tactic I know), but he wasn't nearly the madmen Hitler was.BlueberryMUNCH said:

Well actually it was the British that handed Rommel his ass at El Alamein, Patton invaded italy alongside the commonwealth forces, and drove through the lightly defended southern part of Europe after D-Day while the Brits and Canadian diversion up north encountered most of the German heavy armour.redneckboy said:

Seriously, this man is impressive both as a soldier and as a leader (and I have only started to read his book "Infanterie greift an")
I saw the thread-title and he was the military leader that came immediately to my mind.
Mine answer would have to be.....Stone Wall Jackson! The greatest military general in United States history!

All he did was split up the opposing force into two groups, round around one group then swing over and wipe out the other one. The only way he ever spruced it up was to go after the group on the left first instead of the right.
In fact, his final defeat in the Battle of Waterloo was against a general(who's name escapes me) that noticed Napoleon's tactics and pretty much won because he kept his forces together and they didn't split apart.
Napoleon was just a tiny bit ahead of the times, since before all they did was stand on either side in rows shooting at each other barely even moving. It was bound to change eventually. Others quickly caught and mimic'd his fighting style after his demise.
Also, Napoleon started the Continental System, which prevented anybody from trading with Britain who had the only industry, making everybody but Britain suffer. When he was nearing victory in the Peninsular War against Portugal and Spain, he went back to France leaving his generals to fight, ending in utter defeat since only Napoleon ever commanded them with the strategies.
When trying to invade Russia in the fall, he kept traveling farther into Russia while the Russians were pulling the scorched earth tactic. When Napoleon made it to Moscow, the Russians just burned it down and refused to surrender. After waiting five weeks, he decided to leave, but it was too late and winter had come. Napoleon lost ~500,000 troops trying to leave against starvation, the cold and Russian onslaughts.
My choice would be Bismark. Does anybody like him? No. Was he an excellent war fighter? YES.
Alexandar the Great. He's not 'The Great' for nothing, he quite literally came out of nowhere to conquer the entire known world. His teacher was Aristotle. Yes, THAT Aristotle, one of the most important philosophers to have ever lived. It's like if Stephen Hawking had a Canadian student who would become Prime Minister and then take over the world.
And unlike a great many of other names being thrown up here, Alexander never lost. He fought and conquered till there was nothing left to conquer, then he died, cementing his place in human history forevermore. In some lands he would be declared a God, in others the Devil himself, but none contested his importance or greatness.
Can't ask for a greater legacy than that! He's more legend than man at this point.

For me its a tie between
Robert E. Lee ( I mean come on he defeated so many of the Union generals. To bad he didn't win the last one)
and
Douglas MacArthur (The man started down low and made it all the way to the top. He also basically invited the amphibious assault tactics we use today.)

I would say Lincoln was a great war leader (you know, whole commander in chief thing), considering everything.
Other then that... the guy that was the main naval head of World War 2 for the Americans (I know, thats really sad I dont know his name and I'm American). Considering he was up against Japan with little and managed to turn that all around, its rather impressive.
I'd also throw my hat in for Joan of Arc since she was a chick (in a time where if you had any success as a girl, you were thought to be a witch), cause of what she was able to accomplish.

Seriously though, Napolion is somewhat overrated, his decision to invade Russia was a disaster repeated many times in history, but never by a commander as great as he.
Perhaps Tecumseh, overlook by many he was a superb commander and tactician.
