Any corpse deserves A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF respect, including the corpse of a criminal. Including an international criminal, a war criminal, a terrorist, etc.

There's something fundamentally wrong about the belief that a corpse deserves respect. It's a corpse. Regardless of whatever your religious beliefs (or lack thereof) are, the corpse is no longer the individual, and therefore is no more worthy of respect than a rock. It's an inanimate lump of matter, there's nothing distinguishing it from any other inanimate mass.

Edit: That said, there's also no reason to defile the body. Just leave it there and let it rot for a while, or bury/cremate it if you're overly worried about disease.

Your statement shows a distinct lack of understanding of the principles of burial rituals.

Yes, in a manner of speaking you're showing respect to the corpse.
But in practical terms, you're showing respect to the people that cared about the dead person.

And considering that's a bunch of people who think you're evil incarnate, proving them right at every available opportunity (As in, being incredibly disrespectful of their beliefs) is only going to aggravate the situation.

A funeral is a ceremony for the living. Not the dead. Despite what it might appear to look like on the surface.

He should be buried in the most discreet way possible. Don't "mount him" on the white house lawn. Don't make a "Giant religious Ceremony" or have a public Jummah(friday prayer) devoted to him, which is like the most respect you could pay to a Dead person in Islamic tradition. Don't draw attention to it, becuase that will ONLY have repercussions in varying flavors of "bad".

Just discreetly bury him in an Islamic graveyard somewhere with an unmarked gravestone, maybe in Afghanistan, maybe in America, don't matter, without anyone knowing. Ok maybe his next of kin.......if he has any.

The message we're trying to send here is that we're not at war with all Islam. What's more we send the message that we are magnanimous about the situation. We're better than he was, and we have the strength to be above such petty, two-bit posturing. I definitely agree with that. There are certainly a lot of people who believed in what Bin Laden did, but then again there are criminals that no one cares about or had no followers other than themselves. Which brings up the "why bother" question. Then again it all depends on what you believe in.

You're right that Bin Laden certainly didn't treat his enemies with respect, but we're better than that. We're handling his body according to proper Islamic traditions because unlike him we aren't barbaric terrorists.

Dignity deserved? No. But if some people want it treated with dignity, for who knows what reason, then there's no reason to deny them that, apart from being vindictive... I don't like it, but I'm more or less indifferent.

I agree with this. Someone has to stop one time and offer their hand in peace (although it's a bittersweet, "we killed your top dog" kind of handshake)

Being Serbian, I have been very dismayed by the western media and western politics on how my people were unfairly treated and portrayed during the 90s decade.

I can only hope that this "humane act" is indeed America turning a new leaf.

I am quite skeptical though. From what I have seen, Americans have always acted in their own best interests and will turn on whoever if it will benefit them.

I'll avoid getting off on a Balkan tangent, but I will say this... I do believe it's possible the Americans had him already killed/captured, but were just using his escape as an excuse to secure middle eastern rich mineral deposits and/or oil fields and now that they have what they want, they can end their hostilities. Whether or not there is in fact a conspiracy is irrelevant. What's done is done, i can only hope that the world will become more peaceful after this.

That picture was floating around on one of the facebook like pages; I'm pretty sure the consensus was that it was photoshopped by the guy who uploaded it. If so, this is a major derp moment for the news agency that ran this story.
