I don't think Motorhead belongs in the poll honestly. They're about as consistent as a band gets but they've basically been making the same album verbatim for so long. Their style doesn't ever get old for me, but there's nothing that really, REALLY wows me in their discography.

Torn between the last two, but I'm going to go for Iron Maiden for variety. Motorhead is a bit samey.

Sabbath... By far.

Black Sabbath was the first metal band I heard, and their awesome haunting riffs stick with me for hours after. Maiden and Priest are good for a party, but they lack the brooding dark horror that Sabbath's riffs bring!

Motorhead I don't think are in the same league as the others. They borderline punk more than the others, which is a good and bad thing. I love punk, but I love it when it is just that. They don't seem to make it quite as memorable or as anthemish as other artists of a similar ilk. Maybe it is just me, but I don't see them as anywhere near as good as the others from the musical perspective.

I answered Iron Maiden mainly because I'm most familiar with their music, but I love Black Sabbath too. Motorhead I'm only familiar with their hit singles but I like them enough and Judas Priest I can't even name one of their songs.

I really wanna listen to Iron Maiden now. Thanks.

I won't argue which is "better", I'll just vote for Sabbath as they are my favorite of the bunch. I'm an Ozzy fan from way back so Sabbath is an easy pick for me. But there are no bad options on that list. Each one of them offers something awesome. Dickenson is amazing, Lemmy is awesome, and Halford's sheer vocal power all make for some great metal.

Got to see a Sabbath reunion tour live with Pantera opening. Such a great show.

Motörhead each and every day of the week. And month. And year. And decades too. Not to mention they have the best vocals out of the four in the poll.

Raw power always wins. Which I guess means Iggy and the Stooges win, but I digress.

EDIT - Welcome to the forums! :D
Surely then MC5 should win?

Anyway, I always go Sabbath, the godfathers of doom!

Then time to receive in education into Priest and their most metal songs:

Hell Bent for Leather
Delivering the Goods
Breaking the Law
Rapid Fire
Living After Midnight
The Helion/Electric Eye
Bloodstone (listen to this one first)
Screaming for Vengence
You got another thing comin.
Freewheel Burning

The masterpiece, Painkiller, specifically listen to the first 6 songs on the album.

Painkiller
Dawn Patrol
All Guns Blazing
Leather Rebel
Metal Meltdown
Nightcrawler

All 6 are all killer and no thriller \m/O\m/

Ooh, this is too hard... I think all these bands are spectacular, I really do. My brother introduced me to metal with Iron Maiden. Specifically the Brave New World album. Bruce is a great front-man and they have great consistency when it comes to songs as very few in my opinion are below average.
Black Sabbath are pretty good, but I have to admit that I've never really listened to them that much.
When it comes to Raw metal power nothing beats Motörhead.

Still, since I have to pick, it has to be Judas Priest. Rob's vocals, the riffs, lyrics... I never get tired of Priest (Admittedly, Breaking the Law is ridiculously overplayed/rated).
Also, the painkiller album is godly.

Overall I have to go with which one I actually like listening to the most, which is by far Iron Maiden. I've seen all but Judas Priest live, and they're all spectacular, but Maiden have such a diverse range of music I know that I can listen to them, regardless of what I want to listen to.

However credit where credit is due, Black Sabbath were one of the most influential bands of all time, and their original idea of bringing horror into music comes across so well in their early work. And then Motorhead is... well, Motorhead. They're just brutal, raw power.

If Dickinson is the King of the Metal Empire, then Halford is it's Pope.

Hmm... King of Heavy Metal. Tough choice given the phrasing.

Sabbath and Motorhead I have the most trouble with, because theyre not actually what I really think of when I think of metal. Sabbath are obviously proto-metal and metal pioneers but to me their sound, at least in their prime, is leading to metal but not yet metal. Similar with Motorhead - hard rock sound, but in my head theyre only metal-ish (and Lemmy only ever calls it rock and roll).

On the other hand Priest and Maiden I think of as solidly metal but its hard to deny that their influence is nowhere near Sabbath.

If forced to choose an answer I guess Id flip a coin between Sabbath and Priest.

Lemmy's from my hometown so I guess I have to vote Motorhead in case his mates come round and kick me in.

I heard Iron Maiden first, and as a result, I do tend to gravitate towards them more out of the options given. I just really dig the melodic guitars.

Tough choice really.I love all 4 but it's arguable that without Sabbath laying the foundations the british metal scene might have been very different

I only know Priest and Maiden, and only really Hallowed vs Painkiller.

I voted Maiden anyway.

Gotta go with Maiden. While pre-1986 metal doesn't tickle my fancy as much as more sophisticated styles like black metal and death metal, Iron Maiden has a really appealing sense of melody (Powerslave is my favourite). You can tell they had a big influence on later bands, especially the more melodic ones.

Black Sabbath are "objectively" the most important, but I'm not too fond of the bluesy sound or Ozzy's vocals. Judas Priest don't really appeal to me, at least not until Painkiller (excellent album). Motorhead on the other hand? Ehh... I can see the influence, but sounds too much like traditional rock for my tastes. Same reason I'm not fond of Metallica or Megadeth's first albums.

Personally though? I'd go with Napalm Death or Carcass (even though they're better known for starting the grindcore genre).

Big Iron Maiden fan, but Judas Priest wins for me personally. Probably because I was introduced to them first, but I tend to gravitate to them more than the others.
