I was playing around in the 3D modeling program Blender when I wondered how many people on the Escapist have used it let alone heard of it. So people of the Escapist have you ever used Blender?

Here's a link to two movies made with Blender that are very good for a free program... even if there is cgi involved.

Here's a link for anyone interested in it.

I've seen some of the stuff rendered in it. I downloaded the open-source game they made with it, but I can't get it to play on my machine. Pity.

It's definitely the first 3D modeling program I'd try using. I mean, you can't beat the price!

Only blender anyone ever needs.
Hehe, way to derail the thread.

Unfortunately, I feel hypocritical as I myself do not know what the program in question is.

Well obviously it's free. How can you beat the price of free stuff? That is why free samples always taste better that the actual thing. This excludes game demos... for most games.

That movie was made entirely in blender. (with GIMP and other programs for textures ect.)

And yes, I love mah blender. I'm glad someone made a thread on it, such a great program that people never hear about.

Ya it's a pretty awesome movie. Wasn't there cgi used though?

Practically all I use for animation work is Vue 7 xStream and 3DSMax.

Check this video out to see the power of Vue 7 in experienced hands.

Ya but that's $150. Although it does look pretty good.

Blenders are for milkshakes. Then again, I can fairly be said to be artistically retarded (and in fact once had an art teacher suggest to my mom that I might be subnormal because all he saw was my art). 3D modeling is to me what vector calculus is to a mall full of valley girls.

Umm, Blender is a CGI modeling and animation program. I don't see what you're getting at.

Go to their site, there is a fully operational (though lacks pre-made models) demo version available for free download. Oh, and it puts the Vue logo on every image you render with it. But there are no operational restrictions.

EDIT: Correction, it has the basic model library, but lacks HD level models (for example, the tree models are <150 000 polygons etc) and most non-plant objects.

I've used it before, and it was pretty good, especially considering the $0 price tag. In the end though, I just don't have the patience to make 3D models.

Good god, It's like they put the Crysis engine on steroids. That's pretty damn impressive.

Damn I'm tired and mixing up words. I was thinking of something else... hmmm... now I can't think of it. I'm thinking of the thing where they take the people and put a bunch of sensors on them and put them in front of a green screen and then the 3D model is put over their movement when it's rendered.

EDIT: I Just put this body of text into what you quoted me on... I am tired.

3DSMax has wide support and market penetration, but it's not more powerful than blender. As for Vue 7, I can't say that I've heard much about it or what it's capabilities are. But one thing to remember about blender is that alot of it's userbase is amature, so you rarely get to see how powerful it is in the hands of an experienced professional. However, the userbase has released A vast number of plugins under the GNU, so it also has alot of those same features that are in the video you posted.

If i had to compare it to a commercial product, I'd say it's roughly as powerful as maya.

Hmmm...this one is intrigued. Does this "Blender" work on Linux boxes?
Yep, that movie was made in linux actually. (Be warned, it has a steep learning curve.)

Ah, yeah, they probably used motion capture for the two characters.

Edit: Just looked up Vue, for freeware landscape rendering I recommend Terragen. [http://www.planetside.co.uk/content/view/15/27/]

the learning curve really depends on what you want to do with it, there is a lot of tutorials on it tho and most are free. i made a few things in it without much trouble, even showed it to a few guys at one of my jobs who started to use it to mock up things
