I'm part of a group of friends that likes to get together and play board games on the weekends. We primarily play Risk and Settlers of Catan, but we have also played Axis and Allies on occasion. The problem, we have played this same game roster for a long time now and we have wanted to introduce some new blood into our game list. I have wanted to take the opportunity to introduce a new game to our group and have looked at several different games. However I'm stuck between two games and I wanted the Escapist communities input. Here are the two games I am looking at

Diplomacy: This is a Risk-esque game which has the players vying for world domination. They have industrial centers with armies and navies like in Axis and Allies. The main feature of the game is the fact that players conduct all sorts of acts of diplomacy in the game, some open and some secret. This means that players can forge alliances or gang up on others. We tend to do this in our Risk games, but this game would make it a formal addition to the way we play our games.

Puerto Rico: A Catan-esque game where the players try to accumulate victory points by deciding which kinds of cash crops they plant on their plantations and building various building in the games city. The players can us various unique pieces to boost production or trade in cash crops for money to build other things for more victory points. My group is a very big fan of Catan as well, so they may really like this game.

I'm open to any suggestion to any other games that I may have not heard of, just bear in mind, my group doesn't play table top games (Like Dungeons and Dragons or Warhammer 40k), so while they may be cool games, it really won't mix well with our style of game play. We essentially take a strategy board game and will play it for several hours and see what Hilarity Ensues

Edit 1:I forgot to mention that my friends also have the Risk mythology version and the Risk 2100 version.

Edit 2: The primary Risk board my group plays is the Lord of the Rings edition.

DIPLOMACY! I LOVE that game! Risk, Settlers of Catan, and Axis and Allies are all quite good, but Diplomacy beats them all. To be fair, I've never actually played Puerto Rico.

Also, check out a game called Fortress America. It's a very interesting setup, pitting three players against one very powerful defender. Great game.

I recommend Blokus, it is a four-player game where you have a bunch of tetris like pieces and your goal is to place all of them on the board, but you can only touch your own pieces diagonally. It is a very fun game.

I also recommend Bang!, it is a card game where there is a Sheriff, Deputies, Outlaws, and a Renegade. Everyone knows who the Sheriff is but that is it. The outlaws want to kill the Sheriff, the Sheriff and deputies want to kill the Renegade and outlaws. The Renegade has the hardest job, he wants to kill everyone, but the Sheriff must be killed last.

Both are awesome games to play.

Check out the Battlestar Galactica boardgame. I've played it, and have watched others play it, and it's ridiculously fun. There's a lot of intrigue and strategy involved, with the human players trying to protect the Galactica from all kinds of crises and escape the Cylon fleets, and the Cylon players trying to conceal their identities and secretly act against the humans.

I don't know anything about Diplomacy or Puerto Rico.

As someone who's actually from Puerto Rico, I'm:

a. surprised that I had never heard of this game before

b. mildly offended that it portrays my country as a banana republic

...that is all.

Talisman. Not sure how the newer version is, (and it's expensive), but the original was horribly balanced and fun as hell. It eventually boils down to "figure out the OP character".

Kings N' Things is even better, but you'll never find it outside of Ebay.

Really? From what I've read about the game, it's set during the time of Spanish colonization and the goal is to ship goods back to the Old World.

Ah. Well, that's different, I suppose. The historical nature of it kind of changes things, no?

Midevil!(I hope that's how it spelled) that game is friggin sweet. I hope no one has said that one yet. it's like zombies but with a necronomicon! fun and different most times you play. and like all good board games you can totally screw over your friends! well you can try that or something really crazy like risk 2210. still a favourite of our group of board game nerds. most fun I've had playing a board game though came in risk when we wiped out a friend of mine before even letting him have a turn. it was cruel and awesome!

I love board games. I love Settlers of Catan too. I haven't played Diplomacy or Puerto Rico yet, but they both sound interesting.

My friends and I enjoy playing the Age of Mythology board game (Egyptians, Norse and Greeks) and really enjoy it. We also get a little competitive. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6707/age-of-mythology-the-boardgame

Another one we play, that's not as competitive is Pandemic, where you work together to save the world from a bunch of different diseases. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30549/pandemic

Sorry for the double post, but I also forgot to mention that along with the mythology and 2100 version of Risk, we also have the Lord of the Rings edition of Risk, which is the primary Risk board we play.
