I was talking with a friend a few weeks back and she asked me 'do you prefer books or manga?' I'm a fan of both but I usually prefer books. But I found this quite an interesting question and I'm rather bored so I thought why not ask the Escapist community what they think? Which do you prefer and why do you prefer it; or maybe you hate both? Maybe you love both? What are your thoughts?

I like manga, but I infinitely prefer books. Just that simple. To me, it's like asking whether I prefer movies or a pile of screenshots that makes up the movie.

I prefer books over pretty much every other form of entertainment.

I'm not sure if it's because I have a strong imagination or is the cause of it. Either way I always prefer how stories are inside my head than how directors tend to interpret them and it's a lot easier to be immersed. Seriously, I practically go into a trance when reading.

I like both.
Books tend to be more in-depth and it's nice to have settings and character appearances left to your own imagination. But manga is easier to just pick up and read, and you can appreciate the art too.

I prefer page after page books. Manga seems to go very fast, on the grounds it takes only two hours to read an entire Manga book. Whereas some novels are literally months long in the reading. Greater longevity = greater memory and enjoyment.
I do enjoy both though, Manga may be short but the better Manga's are enjoyable, memorable, and you'll often find yourself flipping back to certain pages to look over or re-read a particular scene or line.

I like books more. I'm a really fast reader, and if it has more pictures than text AND it's shorter than most of the books I read, than I will finish them way to fast. But sometimes I go to my local Barnes & Noble and just read them there :D beatin' the system

Books for me. They make your imagination have to do all the work when they give discriptions of characters, places etc. Manga on the other hand will have images so you know what is going on, what everything looks like.

I love both but books is just what I prefer. I don't really mind which.

To be honest most of the books I have aren't really what you'd call classics, they tend to be more of a factual/humourous nature or a diary rather than an full-on story. The last 'diary book' I read was Kevin Smith : My Boring Ass Life So Far. It was pretty good, and funny as well. The next book I have to read is called Cannabis, I saw the title at the shop and it seemed like it would be a good read, but I haven't gotten round to it yet, much to my annoyance.

As far as manga goes, I probably have more manga than I have books, although I only have manga consisting of three series. Volumes 1-4 of Lucky Star (obviously), volumes 1-8 of Rosario Vampire and volumes 1-14 of Chibi Vampire. The latter, while predictable as far as plot is concerned, was also fun to read as you can appreciate the art that is there as well.

So in the end I voted for both in the poll.

I'll take both.

Sure, they're both in "book" format but they're way too different to compare.
