Poll: Books Vs. e-books

I vote for real books. The tangible weight is satisfying. The smell can be seductive. It can be dropped and still function. You can spill liquid on it, then dry it out and still read it. You can put it near magnets and not have to worry. Hell, you could use magnets as bookmarks. Books don't turn black in daylight. They are made from renewable resources, last longer, don't require software updates or batteries (except at night), and they won't suddenly delete themselves because you forgot to pay a subscription fee.

Books are better than e-readers in nearly every way. The few points e-readers may have in their favor don't make up for their massive flaws.

I like E-readers for being portable but they don't come with the nice book smell.

Indeed it is. Can't get over the fact I got the last one in the store too.
The fact that I was as giddy as a school girl prancing about a book store with one of the most morbid and gruesome books in my arms definitely made that moment Golden.

I kid you not.

Plus I shall try and find this cologne one day.

I prefer physical books to e-readers, it's what i'm used to. I only really read novels on holiday, so i'm not bothered by the fact that downloadable books are cheaper.

Plus, books look and feel nicer, and i feel there's something slightly pretentious about e-readers. I imagine a middle aged businessman in Starbucks thinking subconsciously that he's "young and trendy" by having an e-book.

Well guess what, my imaginary character: I'm young but i don't regard e-books as being trendy.

I'm more of a book person myself. I've never had an e-Book and I see how it can work, but to me, it just seems too sterile and lifeless. To me, the perfect day is sitting in a comfortable armchair, the only light on in the house is the lamp, rain pelting the house, and curling up to a good book. You can't do that with an e-book.

Got to go with physical books. E-books are fine, I occasionally use the kindle app on my phone but I'm more comfortable reading off of paper. Also I take pride in seeing all my finished books on my shelf; pages crumbled and discoloured from having my grumby mits all over them. You just can't get that feeling with an ebook. Though ebooks do have their own advantages not having to carry books around when traveling or on holiday is great.

Comparing an e-book to a real book is like comparing a limerick to a poem.

Considering a limerick is a poem...

How about "comparing an e-book to a real book is like comparing a limerick to an epic or sonnet"?

I was thinking about that, but a limerick is only one of a family of poems - just as an e-book can't be a pop-up, colouring or page based book. And some books really can't be called epic or sonnets.

To everyone complaining about eyestrain and lighting... Check out a Kindle. I read mine for half a day in low lighting without any strain, and I can read it outside at noon on a sunny day with the sun directly above me without any more glare than a real book. The biggest difference? My Kindle has every Harry Potter book, all the Song of Ice and Fire books, the entire Lovecraft collection, the Bro Code, and an assortment of 50+ classics and historical accounts. I still love books, but I love my Kindle even more.

I have a Kindle and I love it, but honestly, I love my regular books more. I can't honestly tell you why, I just do.

I voted e-books but both have their place.

E-books = convenience, space, portability, and the all important "stuck somewhere without having brought a book to read because it was an unexpected delay" factor. E-books can sync perfectly with a smartphone, which most people always have with them.

Book = Feel, research, notes, "back-flipping" (flipping between certain pages for cross referencing), and can make you look smarter than you are.

I jut got an E-book. And with star bucks down the street all the ease of gettiing a new book is great. Not to mention the cheapness. I got H.P Lovecraft collection for a buck. For me holding a book open is kinda hard.

And you didn't once consider purchasing his Black Leather Bound Golden etched Necronomicon all for the low price of $25!?!

I got into Lovecraft because the version of his works which I have features Mike Mignola artwork on the cover. I've seen this edition you guys speak of and it's nothing less of awesome, it looks like an old tome spewed from the gut of the abyss and it has some really sick illustrations too.

Yes it is. But for 25 bucks i could have bought the collection 5 times and give it to all my imaginary friends. And i got it on the nook.

I prefer reading from books. I love the smell of a bookstore, the feel of crisp new pages as I flip through to the next page. I just love books and reading them!
