My friends and I were playing Borderlands 2 today and we started discussing the many different components that make up all of the different guns. While we thought the new manufacturer bonuses were a good addition, ultimately we felt there could be more personal customization.

First: all base gun rigs would have a set amount of customization points that would depend on it's rarity and level requirement. Each weapon type would have different possible attachments, such as optics and magazines.

Second: gun attachments (optics, magazines, stocks, etc.) would use a certain number of customization points, also varying with rarity and level requirement.

Third: elements could be added by infusing a certain amount eridium (based upon rarity and level) and a weapon that already has the desired element.

Fourth: guns could be painted with layers of different preset patterns and colors to increase personal taste.

We weren't exactly sure how balanced this system could be, so I was wondering what you fellow Escapists thought about implementing it into Borderlands or any other game?

I think that's a good idea actually. DLC worthy.

I'm imagining something not disimilar to the enchantment dude in Torchlight.

EDIT: By which I mean there should me a random element. The loot system in BL2 & Torchlight is largely the same; a system that stimulates the part of the brain that is over-developed in gambling addicts. If it was just a mechanism by which you could make the perfect gun then it would break the game.

EDIT EDIT: Perhaps you could somehow trash gear for upgrade points? Or specific enhancements?

Well it's a neat idea but wouldn't add much to this type of game, because it's all random you may at any point be a minute away from swaping guns so those customizations would go to waste, and sooner or later you just wouldn't use it.

With 10 billion guns or more sadly each gun is only one billionth as important.

I was also thinking about this, in order to give most weapons more purpose than just "insta-sell."

oh yeah, i feel the only thing missing from borderlands 2 is more customisation. stuff like outfit colour swabs could totally be done but i'd love if we could build weapons. choose what kind of scopes or ammo clips etc.

The only amount of customisation I think is needed is to be able to toggle scopes on/off. Sometimes it gets ridiculous using a shotgun with a sniper scope.

Anything else (not counting cosmetics) would in my opinion compromise the point of the game and the enjoyment of finding those truly powerful/wacky guns.

I wouldn't hold my breath on it. I believe there was a statement from Borderlands 1 when this very idea was brought up that since there were so many guns in BL1 that Gun Customization didn't really matter to them.

Same probably goes for BL2. Granted, I would have LOVED to put a better scope on a Sniper Rifle or any scope or a Rocket Launcher but I doubt their opinion on the matter has changed at all.

Or maybe I just imagined them giving their opinion but with 87 Bazilion guns I can see why they wouldn't put it in.

I like the concept. First it adds an extra level to the gear hunt. You're not just looking for specific weapons but also for drops with specific components to upgrade your other gear with. Second, you could use it as a gold sink (e.g. charge extortionate amounts for swapping parts around), which games like this are often lacking by end-game. I haven't figured out yet if BL2 is the same, but with the way the gear worked in BL1 it would have been easy enough to implement; each weapon was just a bunch of components thrown together.

I'm in two minds about the itemisation in BL2 so far. I like the way the manufacturers have their own unique properties, so that a Dahl sniper and a Jakobs sniper are totally different weapons. But some of the combinations don't seem to be worth anything at all. Who uses Hyperion pistols?
