I had a thought about this and while I dont like the idea of adding multiplayer to everything I kind of liked to see it here, under some conditions of course, like:

(This is just a way that I see it being fun)

- 4 vs 4 matches where every player is one of the characters (or even better, BL1 characters vs BL2)

- level up in each kill, at the end of the round the level resets (like Monday Night Combat)

- weapons spawns on the map (players respawn with a generic weapon)

- weapons are "unique" for the multiplayer (are available in singleplayer but in here their stats are balanced with eachother)

- multiple game modes (Team Deathmatch, Invasion, Gears of War style, etc)

- add AI to the mix and make team game modes around them, like every AI killed gives money and the player needs to take that money back to base, if the player is killed by another player on the other team then the other guy gets his money.

Just some suggestions because honestly, a game with such cool environments and a shit load of cool weapons deserves a multiplayer mode in my opinion. It would even remind me of Timesplitters with so much variety and possibilities.

What do you think? (at least about the overall idea of competetive multiplayer in Borderlands)

It has one.
But I understand what you're talking about but... nah. The coliseums in BL1 were kinda shitty, a whole game mode about it would probably be shitty.

The thing with BL1 "competetive" coliseum thingy is just that the weapons were always so overpowered and the combat area so small that there was no room for anything to happen.

I dont know if it would work, and it definitly had to be seperate from the sp/coop since the weapons and shields are made for fighting a level based enemy and not a diferent player permenantly at the same level in terms of health and shields. It would need some special overhaul in the statistics and shit.

I'd like the idea of a team vs team mode, but not directly versing each other - like a find the treasure first mode, or an arena thing where you're separated into two sections and have to survive longer than the other team. It's competitive, but it emphasizes coop instead.

Normal Deathmatches and what-not would not work in the slightest, though. It would have to be very creative.

Definitely nay. In the context and style of BL, it would play out too much like a cash grab addition to an already great game.

No.

The active powers of the characters would need to be changed for a co-op tournament to be even remotely balanced.

As it stands it would go like this.

The moment Zero starts spazing out/vanished everyone would know that he is in deception mode.

Maya's phaselock doesn't hold the opponent in duels, it just does massive damage but she could just run in and phase someone and they would be out.

Axton + longbow turret + Nuke = Overpowered.

Salvador's Tanking ablities wouldn't help that much.

The game was built from the ground up to be about co-op as a team against the world.

No, simply put, the whole game would need to be re-worked just to be balanced. The game was built with PvE in mind.

Hmm, it might work, but not with any of the scenarios you mentioned. There has to be something to emphasize and utilize the coop teamwork that makes Borderlands so great. Maybe some sort of "Which team can survive the longest" type of thing. One where you're not directly facing against someone else. You could even try integrating it into single player, where depending on how well you do, you get some random gun or some money.

No.

Of course, I hate competitive multiplayer in general, so I'm not exactly what you could call an unbiased voter. Only time I ever enjoyed it was in Crysis 2. Maybe it could work, I dunno. I just know that I'd never play it, so it doesn't really matter to me.

Seen the duels? All duels end with the FIRST shot.

Competitive co-op would work. Two teams go through waves of enemies racking up points. The team with the most points at the end of 5 rounds (or if the other team is completely eliminated) wins.

Mano A Mano 4v4 battles is a horrible idea and never should have been thought of by anyone.

EDIT: Holy geez. Never has an escapist poll been so unanimous. Ever.

I think the poll results speak for themselves.
But yeah, no. It would not be in the spirit of Borderlands.
Besides, don't we have enough competitive multiplayer modes in other games? Shoehorning one into B2 would only detract from the experience.
And then there's the balancing issues due to the crazy weapons.
So, really, it would be a lot more trouble than it's worth.

I think team survival would be fun. I could even see deathmatches being fun but they would need the guns to be toned down so you don't die so fast plus the ability to have teammates pick you back up.

I wouldn't play anything other than coop with this game. Most of it's charm is in the way it presents it's characters and story and I feel shoving all that into competitive play would feel very forced. I'm guessing if this did happen they would lock what guns could be used as well, which would take a lot of the fun out of it for me.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I really can't stand tacked on multiplayer modes to just make sure every shooter out the door has some type of Deathmatch. I feel like that would be the case here.

I'm not saying it 100% couldn't be done in a good way that stays true to the games experience, but I really don't think it's needed (and judging by the poll, I'm not alone).

However, I am biased because I can't fucking stand most multiplay in shooters these days. I like my good old Doom, Quake, and Quake II deathmatch.

Maybe if it was a fast paced Dynasty warriors type team territory capture thing.
But no.

You'd have to warp the game a whole lot to make it actually function, and even then what's the point of competitive multiplayer in Borderlands when so many other games are designed specifically for it and are able to do it a hell of a lot better?
