I searched this, got 2 threads from early last year.
So, the boss theme, a theme designed to either motivate, terrify or disorient the player.
From the 8-bit themes of mega man to fully orchestrated progressive symphonies on JRPGS and metal mixes,
the boss theme has evolved over a period of over 20 years.
What is your favorite?
And given the evolution (or devolution depending on your outlook) of gaming has the boss theme been ousted of our beloved image of gaming and gone the way of the health bar, or am I a pretentious arsehole who's using this thread to show off his favoruite? :
I may be sounding ignorant but in recent games I have played I noticed a lack of music for the bosses in said games. And even If they were there they weren't particularly memorable, forget the battle theme itself, what about buildup?
The lack of a good theme can ruin a lot of potential buildup to a battle, either symbolizing the end of a main quest leading up to a harrowing ultimate challenge, or psyching the player up to go kickass.
When most bosses in Dragon Age's (not picking targeting it in particular) first half appeared, I was barely aware they were bosses, and I cant even remember if they had their music at all.
Not saying the atmosphere in the game was bad or anything! (Raises LV.9999 Flame shield.)
But as for games like mega man, final fantasy and Dynamite headdy I still have their tracks still playing in my head right now.
The Angry Gate Keeper made me think about this (see why?)
So what do YOU think?
