I searched this, got 2 threads from early last year.

So, the boss theme, a theme designed to either motivate, terrify or disorient the player.

From the 8-bit themes of mega man to fully orchestrated progressive symphonies on JRPGS and metal mixes,
the boss theme has evolved over a period of over 20 years.

What is your favorite?
And given the evolution (or devolution depending on your outlook) of gaming has the boss theme been ousted of our beloved image of gaming and gone the way of the health bar, or am I a pretentious arsehole who's using this thread to show off his favoruite? :
I may be sounding ignorant but in recent games I have played I noticed a lack of music for the bosses in said games. And even If they were there they weren't particularly memorable, forget the battle theme itself, what about buildup?
The lack of a good theme can ruin a lot of potential buildup to a battle, either symbolizing the end of a main quest leading up to a harrowing ultimate challenge, or psyching the player up to go kickass.

When most bosses in Dragon Age's (not picking targeting it in particular) first half appeared, I was barely aware they were bosses, and I cant even remember if they had their music at all.
Not saying the atmosphere in the game was bad or anything! (Raises LV.9999 Flame shield.)

But as for games like mega man, final fantasy and Dynamite headdy I still have their tracks still playing in my head right now.
The Angry Gate Keeper made me think about this (see why?)

So what do YOU think?

Good boss themes are far from dead. Demon's Souls is living proof of that:

My favorite, however, would have to be Pokey Means Business, namely for it's versatility.

I stand both corrected and relieved.

Debatably White Glint's theme from AC:FA. Gets you incensed for the fight, got a nice flow to the song which you can move your mech in time with if you're feeling fancy...

Yeah, boss themes are far from dead.

All I can say is that One Winged Angel is a part of the reason why Sephiroth is so adored by his army of Fanboys/girls.

I agree that Music can make or break a boss.
The theme is very important to me.

I agree that many are not as good as the could or should be but, we still have a lot amazing Boss themes.
They're not gone yet.
Here are a few of my Favorites.

And one of my favorites from my days on the SNES

God of War III, when you fight Poseidon. I mean listen...hoooooly shit.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed when you fight Darth Vader. Truly epic for Star Wars fans.

I'll second that. That game was so full of awesome music.

My favorite was for Spirit of Motherwill. Nice and threatening. Fits a trudging behemoth like Motherwill perfectly

Every Shadow of the Colossus song in boss battle music.

My favourite in particular (I even have it on my Ipod) is this one right here:

Badass opera music while trying to kill a ginormous sand dragon? Awesome.

the end boss in Grandia 2 (one of the best games to grace the dreamcast) was one of the hardest endeavours in gaming in my long career. don't remember the name of the guy, but he had multiple heads, and had a move that obliterated with one hit. so frustrating.

There is still plenty of boss battles though through the games that I play, be it an RPG of sorts like Zelda, or a few JRPG's, to the lowliest of boss battles in Mario games.

I love all Final Fantasy Music, all the music in at least the PS1/PS2 ones is amazing

imo, FF8, "The Extreme" when you fight the final version of ultimicia [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01mxuw31GVs&feature=related] is good

either that or One Winged Angel [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7wJ8pE2qKU], I can't really decide

I would tend to agree with you, but you can't argue with iconic status that One Winged Angel has obtained what with the Advent Children remix and it's inclusion in Kingdom Hearts. And really when you think of Sephiroth you think "SE-PHI-ROTH!!!"

But Kefka is much more evil then Sephiroth is.
