I'm a metalhead and an RTS player.

I take it that this game is something worth getting as a result, but I looked into it a while ago and most reviews said it's crap.

What are they missing? What makes the game worth getting?
Most reviews didn't say it's crap... That's most forumgoers. Most reviews said it was good. And by the sounds of it you should definitely look into getting it. Only thing is though... It's not Starcraft. It's nothing like any RTS you've played before (unless you played Sacrifice way back when). You're not a mouse cursor, you're a guy with a battleaxe and a guitar and an army you can do teamup attacks with and buff with solos. You're the most powerful unit you have - don't be tempted to sit in the sky being useless, get down there and attack!

I The problem people have with it, essentially, is that while the gameplay is great once you understand it, it's not very well explained, and if the game's not played right it quickly becomes frustrating and boring. And since it's not a straightforward game in a traditional genre, people struggled with knowing exactly how much strategy to use, what attacks were useful, stuff like that.
This is a good point.... Schafer himself had to come out and explain in an interview how to play the game, as so many gamers were getting frustrated with it.

Honestly I was sad that it didn't stay a fun hack'n'slash like the lying bastard of a demo told me it was.
Damn that awesome demo.
And seriously...he explained how to play the game?
link?
Umm hang on....

Very well, I shall look into it. None of you really answered my question, but that's probably due to the fact that it was vague and subjective.

Still, to have provoked instant reactions telling me it's worth a look - it would be foolish not to now.

It think it was merely ok.. And It ended very apruptly =/ Loved the art style but the gameplay felt a bit reppetetive and the controlls a bit stiff. To bad because I really enjoyed the beginning of the game... it just got old I guess.

Sorry, guess I did the good ol' "read the first line of the post and reply before reading the rest" thing.

What they're missing is that they're not using the tools they've been given - partially because not enough emphasis has been put on the importance of these tools. Basically, they're treating the battles like a regular RTS game, flying in the air, creating troops and directing them around, but not doing anything to support their army. What they SHOULD be doing - which people generally find out after repeatedly failing when playing the 'traditional RTS' way - is using combat, Double Team attacks and solos to their full effect. Like I said earlier, you play as what amounts to your army's most powerful unit, so if you keep that unit out of battle, you're just going to lose.

As to what makes the game worth getting, it's a completely different take on the idea of an RTS than is usually seen, and one that works perfectly on consoles to boot. Its strategy lies not in micromanagement, but in knowing where to direct your attention, and what attacks and buffs to use. It's just generally a really unique game, and if you're an RTS fan it's worth having a look at how the genre can be taken in different directions, and still have just as much strategy. And apart from anything else, it's damn fun!

Not at all, my remarks were merely to reflect that my question itself was badly worded and proposed, but thanks for taking it upon yourself to answer it anyway =)

Not much that I can say other than cheers, and I shall have a look.

I liked it, but it seemed really short... not enough time developing the characters...

I kind of think maybe it should have been a film or something instead...

Guess I'm a rarity in the fact that while I enjoyed it, I thought the game was a huge disappointment and that the farther you got into the game, the less fun it became.

I'd give it a 6/10... still a passing grade, but just barely.

The music was good, the world design was beautiful, the story is engaging and funny.

But the gameplay in and out of itself was lacking. You simply didn't have enough moves/combo to make this a very interesting game from a hack and slash point of view and the rts system was pretty shallow as well. I'm aware that you're supposed to be fighting alongside your guys and using your solos and so on - and I did. However, strapping to shallow systems together doesn't make for a good experience...

My best memories of the game are driving around the map, looking for Forges, Jumps and other miscalleanous thing with 'Dawn of Battle' blaring out. Good time. But the actual fighting and rts could have done with a lot more depth...

I loved it. The gameplay was kind of...well, not great, but the setting was awesome, the characters likeable and the music great. It's probably as good as console RTS games are going to get (by their very design RTS games need all those buttons), and the hack-and-slash bits were really good too, even if they get way too hard to find late in the game.

I liked the game. That said, it could have explained some things better; I played through the game once on the Brutal difficulty without knowing I could upgrade units in the RTS sections. I'm sure it's explained, but it must have quickly went over it as I had no idea about it.
