I decided to make a thread for this because it is such an important milestone in my life... more so then any 10k thread, topic about bisexuals, or VS thread. I just bought my first home and I will be paying the mortgage myself because I have no partner (and as many nerds such as myself, I feel like I never will).

I live in Australia which makes this thread much larger and important than you think:

Yes we have the most expensive housing in the world. I will be paying this off for at least a third to a half of my maximum life span.

My interactive poll question is do you own property?

My second and much more serious question is of those of you that live in your own castle, so to speak, what advice can you give someone just starting out?

Thanks in advance.

I was always told that if it cost you more than 15 years to pay off, you're getting boned.

No house here, either. Guess I'll just have to wait until my parents die (A horrible, horrible joke.).

Nope, don't have my own house.

Living with your parents has many advantages (untill a certain age has been reach and you know it's time to gtfo)

Well, most people in Australia take 20-25 years to pay off their house. It will take me at least 20 with my salary.

Nope, don't own my own house. Fortunately, my family owns several houses, so I'm pretty lucky considering the average home in Vancouver costs a little over a million dollars.

When the time comes i'll buy an apartment.

Cheaper, don't need to pay for security, etcetera.

Geez, and I thought the housing market here in the US was bad (just as an example, the house I live in now sold in 1989 for just under $40,000. It's now worth just over $250,000. US inflation from 1989 to 2011 is ~82%. In that time my house's value has gone up 525%)

OT: unfortunately, I have no advice for you besides "do your own work on the house whenever possible if you have the time... labor is ridiculously expensive"
I'm lucky enough to be descended from a man who pioneered a few acres around here in the 1920s, so I'll never be hurting for real estate...

I'm a uni student and I live in Melbourne...so no, I don't own a house nor am I likely to in the foreseeable future. Once I've left this bloated mess of a city, however, I will be looking to permanantly settle down, though I've got a considerable amount of traveling and career building to do before I can commit to a location for land ownership.
