I'd played the first, briefly, at a friends house. I was about to buy it when I saw the second one, looked at the back of both boxes and then bought the second. I decided there wasn't much point in following the plot when it really just amounts to: kid with silly hair-do and disney characters wail on some glowy eyed black things in various shapes and sizes until
evil disney character pops up and they wail on him to, ad nauseum. Really I was looking for a game that was more actiony than rpg-y.
Moving on: one of my favourite games is Shadow Hearts 2 which does carry on from the first game. I've never played Shadow Hearts 1 though, nor have I ever felt the need to.
However I suspect this is probably because SH2 explains the backstory to everything that happens in it's own story thus covering anything relevent from the first game.
Also recently got my hands on Digital Devil Blah 2. I have a basic understanding of what transpired in the first game (everyone wanted to get to the 'nice place' because they were living in a shit hole and they had to fight to get there. The good guys won and got transported there) and haven't really yearned for the chance to experience anything more.
All other 'sequels' that come to mind have no relation to any of the games that came before them.
