I'm honestly not that much of a fan of thrash, I prefer either Melodic death metal (The Black Dahlia Murder) or Metalcore (Caliban), but I prefer Metallica to the ones listed, with Slayer in second place.

On topic, I have to say Metallica. In fact, I don't even like any of the other Big 3 that much. One of the best things about Metallica is that they tried something new (even if some of it was crap, I'm looking at St. Anger).
Definitely Metallica. They have been my favorite band since 1983-84... cant remember the exact date, but it was right after Master of Puppets came out. Rest in Peace, Cliff Burton. Also, they need to get Jason Newsted back!!!
No offense, but to be honest I cannot stand what is defined as "metal" today. It irritates me to no end to hear them constantly scream into the mike and call it singing. I will take my old school metal any day over that stuff. Can't get into Anthrax (apart from their more commercial album with Safe Home on, fans don't crucify me), and Slayer are a bit one dimensional. I do like their Reign in Blood and South of Heaven records though.
Whoops, forgot Megadeth. Haven't much of their stuff, but I don't like Mustaine's voice much.

The main reason they're called the big four to my knowledge is because Sonisphere festival marketed them as such last year.
Going to say Megadeth because I like a few of their songs (although their live gigs consist of walking on stage, playing a few songs and walking off in search of the cheque.)
I'd like to add that 'tallica bore me something rotten, it's pretty grim when a band has to announce for live shows "It's the good album! Honest!".

Ok ok, I'm only slightly serious.
I have mixed feelings about all of "the big four", to be honest.
Megadeth I haven't listened a whole lot to, and what I have listened from them I didn't particularly like.
Anthrax have some fun songs, although I'd much rather listen to S.O.D. instead.
Slayer have made a couple of really great records in the mid and late 80's, but since then, they haven't released anything that I consider to be noteworthy.
Metallica is a tough one. They've made one of my favorite metal albums of all time (Ride The Lightning), along with several really strong releases in the 80's. And then the 90's happened. The 00's haven't been much better for them either, although I suppose Death Magnetic was alright.

You've pretty much hit my same reasons for liking Megadeth. Also, unlike Metallica, Megadeth have not taken 15+ years to get back to doing what made them so awesome. Sure, Dave wavered a little into a more hard rock direction, but he's always been more technically interesting than Kirk and James.MiracleOfSound said:

Metallica haven't made anything worthwhile since their "Astronomy" (Blue Oyster cult) cover, the last Megadeth albums aren't even worth mentioning, and the I haven't cared enough (or been given a reason to care) about Anthrax or Slayer the last 15 years so why even mention them.

Metallica are by far the most mainstream so they will easily be the most popular. I like all of them, but of the big 4 Megadeth are easily my favourite.
