shh, dont speak reason, you'll end the debate on if obama is a jew hitler who wants to destroy america,Telen said:There's two classes of opinions: Valid and invalid.
A valid opinion has some basis in fact and is a reasonable conclusion that, while you may not personally agree, is understandable. So, say, I like using the fully upgraded shotgun in Bioshock 1 because it is an effective weapon with a visceral kick and some range and the specialty ammo is handy in a range of situations. My friend, on the other hand, goes full wrench-jockey, and spends a lot of tonics to optimize things that this works for him, and likes the feel of impact and likes blindsiding someone so they drop in one hit. Even though it is not my preferred style, I can understand his reasons for playing that way.
An invalid opinion is...oh, hating Metroid Prime 1 for not playing like Halo, or being in a bad mood because the sky is blue and hydrogen only has one electron. An invalid opinion may have no basis in fact, or in fact, contradict facts. If the facts cited as evidence can be proven to be objectively wrong, the opinion is invalid and it behooves you to revise your worldview so it more closely resembles reality.
your definition of majority is wrong, majority = 50%Imat said:Well, depends on what you mean by inferior. Overall, yeah, that opinion'd be wrong. However, races have both advantages and disadvantages. If every race in an rpg had the same stats, would anybody ever pick anything but dwarf? The answer is no, no they would not. Real world example: Being a white male in the US puts you in the "majority," with access to exclusive clubs just by being you, but it also means you're less likely to get a job (Unless it truly is based on merit, then its anybody's game), less likely to get scholarships for college, etc. Advantages and Disadvantages, but no character creation screen for you.rockyoumonkeys said:Of course they can. If your opinion is that one race is inferior to another, your opinion is wrong.
Just because you put "I think" in front of something doesn't make it an opinion. It makes it a falsification.Irony said:Nope. The Austin said:That's not classified as an opinion. That's a statement with "My opinion" in front of it.Kortney said:Of course they can.
"My opinion is that people from New Zealand all have three legs".
That's not true. Yet it can still be an opinion.
OP: No. No it can not be wrong.
As stated above, a statement can be wrong, but an opinion can not be wrong.
For example:
"I thought that Mass Effect sucked."
Is this wrong? Of course not, because it's an opinion.
Now, look at this:
"Mass Effect sucked"
Is this wrong? Yes. Yes it is. Because, despite the fact that I don't like Mass Effect, it is held in general consensus to be a good game, therefore, my statement is false.
See?![]()
My opinion = I think
"I think that people from New Zealand all have three legs."
That's an opinion.
And why is Mass Effect a good game because the "general consensus" is that it is a good game? "General consensus" is the same as "a lot of people think" which is also the same as "alot of people's opinions are". And if were saying that the "majority's opinion" is in the right, I would just like to bring up the point that it was the "majority's opinion" that Jews were less than human circa 1936~1946.
Majority opinion (or general consensus as you put it) =/= Fact
in my professional opinion, your thread has bin hijacked, i blame rockyoumonkeys because he is clearly wrong based on the majority of people who speaking out in this thread atm, by majority rules i decree rockyoumonkeys is wrong. in tell that majority changes, than i am wrong.Just Pman said:Okay, can we seriously stop making this about race? Gah...I'm tired and wasn't thinking when I voted. Can I change mine to this?Dango said:No, they can not. They can NOT be proven true or false, and they are completely made up.
Well what about the people (like me) who live among people who are complete assholes, and feel extremely nervous when trying to do something kind, like saying "You guys should really stop picking on that kid, he hasn't done anything wrong. You guys are assholes." but am too nervous to not follow it up by "But that's just my opinion." Rules like that can't be applied to everything.captain underpants said:Personally, I usually want to punch people in the face when they defend their ludicrous, bigoted, ignorant or just plain stupid statements with 'well, that just my opinion'. Anyone that says that should be roundly ignored.
i agree, like people who think every one is equal, but i think we can all agree Steven hawking is better and more valuable than the guy who bags your grocerys.captain underpants said:Personally, I usually want to punch people in the face when they defend their ludicrous, bigoted, ignorant or just plain stupid statements with 'well, that just my opinion'. Actually, that is true. The third leg is shorter than the other two. BOOYA!Kortney said:Of course they can.
