if you have a proprietary media reading device, and propietary media format, and the only means to production for that media... all encrypted in a propietary company format that is converted in house after code is transfered from the developer.

then sure. but then you couldn't sell or make money off of all the propietary tools.

I dunno, I think Steam did a decent job of it, although in China everyone plays CS 1.5, they can't even hope to play with anyone who actually has an account. I think the most the company can do is create a divide between the people who pay and play, and the ones who take the cheaper way out.
