I noticed recently that when ever there is a game or film that I am playing/watching and there are subtitles on I can't help but look at the subtitles. I don't know why I cant but it irritates me. As hard as I try I can't not look at them, which got me into a few scrapes playing GTA4. Sometimes whilst watching a film with subtitles on, I will forget they are there, then notice them again, which angers me more so.

does anybody else have this problem, or am I all alone in this odd situation?

I wouldn't say ALL my focus is drawn to the subtitles, but a good amount of it is. probably more than they're worth.

I find it easy to avoid watching subtitles, but that is because I choose to have them turned on for games. I get used to them, so if I don't want to see them, it is easy to ignore.
But I normally watch the subs anyway so I know what is being said...

I can, but i choose not too. I find them useful if i miss some of the dialogue or don't hear it properly

I've used them for years cause my mother hates anything with the slightest bit of volume so i am used to watching the action and reading them at the same time

ARGH! I hate this! Oblivion is such a great game - with full lip-syncing and voice acting and everything; that it sadden's me so much that I can't tear my eyes away from the subtitles. I generally read through them quickly and click so the conversation goes faster. But if I was playing in S3D then I would most definitely get some high quality over the ear headphones, disable subtitles; and throw myself into the world of Tamriel.

They don't bother me, but I use them when there're some complicated words or when they're not speaking one of four languages I know. Dubbing kills the feeling and ought to be banned drom films and games.

Yes. I have watched a lot of foreign films, so I have gotten used to quickly scanning them to look back up at the screen. But it is hard sometimes. Pan's Labyrinth was so visually striking, I found myself unable to tear my eyes away from the screen to read. I had to watch it again to figure out what people said doing key moments.

But if the people are speaking English, I don't feel the need to look at the subtitles, in games or in film.

I usually play games with subtitles on so I know what's being said. A lot of the characters seem to have low voices and it can be easy to miss them when I'm trying to shoot something or my brother has his system up a little loud. Reading them doesn't really bother me though since I'm used to it from watching subbed anime.

My eyes are glued to them. Not reading all the dialogue first just feels wrong to me.

When I notice them, I can't help but watch them. It's usually more of a good thing though, since I can very rarely tell what people are saying when they talk fast/quiet/etc.
