Does anybody else struggle with some of the Captchas? Especially the ones used on the escapist itself. (http://www.google.com/recaptcha)

I just find some of them hideously hard, the last one I refreshed three times and got it wrong twice ): It doesn't help that I'm often slightly tired when browsing.

You do know that you only have to type one word, and the other one is there to fool any bots, right? If there's a word you can't decipher, especially if it uses an alphabet you can't type on an ASCII standard keyboard, just put a space between it and the one you can type, and it'll go through. Recaptcha is actually the least annoy captcha system; you should see the ad based ones that they try every now and then, or the ones that aren't ad based, but force you to type a random string of letters and numbers.

Really? xD That seems so much easier!

I don't have any problem with captcha, and the one option poll is just arbitrary. Plus, it doesn't make everyone mad. I like it because it prevents spam-bots.

But it doesn't. We still get spambots.

We never needed Captcha in the first place. We get very little spam and what we do get hasn't even been effected by it.

Trust me, I'm usually the first to criticize this site if they're doing something wrong, and we really were getting a lot of spam at the time they initially implemented it. It was at off peak hours (like, 2AM eastern), but it was there, and it did cut down on spam temporarily. Unfortunately, either the bots are getting smarter, or the spammers are actually paying people to spam this site, because we've been getting a lot more spam lately than we used to. The entire first page of Off Topic was taken up by spam for a while yesterday, because of a concerted attack.

Never had a problem with them, save one or two times. They aren't even that frequent. Just a question though, are the captchas case sensitive? that might be why mine didn't go through once or twice.

This poll is biased. Here in the wonderful world of Pub-club, captcha doesn't make us mad as we never get them ;-)

Spam bots on the other hand we do seem to have more than when I first joined, unless I just didn't notice them then or joined in an unusually quiet patch. I do agree it's a problem which needs a better solution. I propose for any spam bots we catch: cutting off their head, throwing their body in the lake and then putting their head in prison. That'll teach them.

I'm not sure about case sensitivity. I always type the correct case anyway (as a linux user, EVERYTHING is case sensitive, so I'm well used to it).

You can always have a play with captcha on this page.
It appears it isn't. I was asking because since captchas don't have to be the same size or aligned really you would have no idea whether it is a capital or undercase s,v,c etc.

Seriously...I posted a topic a little while ago and before I could post it I had to do a Captcha containing the word "deleted" spell backwards and upsidedown...what the hell am I supposed to do with that?!

Personally I think you should only have to do a Captcha maybe once every 30 minutes or so.

But aside from the fact that it is damn near impossible to read some of them, I've got another issue with them. Why should I have to do them at all? Stop me if I'm wrong, but aren't they there specifically to weed-out spam bots? Doesn't the very fact that I'm clicking "gimme a new one" over and over as I try to find one I can actually make out say right there "This is not a bot"?

After playing with that page a bit, I confirmed that captcha is not case-sensitive and to pass one by only typing one word, you must type the one that's harder to read. For example, in this captcha:

Answering with just "isaygos" will suffice, but "Formerly" by itself wouldn't work.

And now we know!
